Kiev in the dead of winter????? Or ?????

by Vasvari

I have the opportunity to spend a week or so in Budapest several times a year. I will be back sometime between the 26th December and the end of the first week of January 2011. I thought this time it would be nice to take a side trip someplace. At best i will have 2 nights and three days so it needs to be direct close and focused. I thought maybe Kiev. I dont mind the cold if there is somehting to see and do. My requirements are non-stop out of budapest and no more than a 2 hour flight. I've been to most of Romania, most of Bulgaria, most of the Czech Republic and parts of Austria. I would prefer something "different" with a fiar or event or ...... Kiev? Other suggestions???

It may be quite cold in winter (if the winter is going to be like the last one), so you would not be able to do a lot of walking tours. So you will be limited to museums and pubs :-)
Kiev is a great city but I think you would enjoy it much more if you would come when it's warm. May is especially good: chestnut trees are blooming and the last weekend of May there is a "day of the city" event (music festivals, art/handicraft fairs, etc.)

One of the most spectacular weeks i ever spent was in Budapest in December. The day we arrived the town got a foot of snow and it was beautiful -- at least until it warmed up a few days later and snow turned to grey mush. We end up back in Budapest a few times a year and i thought we could take advantage of the posistion to take a side trip someplace for a couple of days. But its looking grim.

I say instead of Kyiv, get on the train and go to Mukachevo (5-7 hours by train I believe). it's a small town 40 km from Hungarian border. On Jan 14 they have an annual vine festifal which is a lot of fun. you can also proceed then to Lviv. the train ride is totally spectacular! lviv is a gorgeous Renaissance city. overall, Western Ukraine has much more to offer during the Christmas/NY season when Kyiv. let me know if you need more details. you can also visit my pages on those cities for more info. best, Olya

I've been to Kiev in December and the central area around Maidan square was relatively festive... The weather wasn't terrible, well, not if you have spent December anywhere else in Europe!

I would have to agree that Lviv is a beautiful city, but it looks much more like central Europe than does Kiev, if you wan't something different - Kiev is a great city and should be very interesting to you.

Travel Tips for Kiev

Language

by caprice_222

Ukraine is a bilingual country. People speak both Russian and Ukrainian - sometimes in the same sentence. Ukrainien has the same relationship to Russian that Spanish has to Italian: its related, but complitely distinct. Its also softer and gentler-sounding. The country's Russified east speaks mostly Russian, and its nationalist west speaks mostly Ukrainian. Kiev, in the center of the country, usually speaks Russian, but street signs and advertising are usually in Ukrainian. Of'course, most visitors to Ukraine will speak english, which is common enough among kiev's young people. A few words of guide-book ukrainian or russian will go a long way with flattered natives. German is sometimes spoken among older residents

Kiev knew it's bad time...

by Tanechka

Kiev knew it's bad time and now city is going through a good time. Time of renewing. A lot of the buildings in the center are under a reconstruction, the same about the roads. Even so called 'sleeping' districts are getting their new face.

St. Alexander Catholic Church

by OlenaKyiv

It is worth to take your time and spend some time inside of St. Alexander Roman-Catholic church. There were some views that its builders' were not much successful in creating reach decor. I think maybe there is a part of truth; however, I think that simplicity of the church draws attention and high spirits. A lot of light coming from windows gives a thought of purity.

by bugulma

To visit the cathedral is the must!! You may enjoy iconostasis, architecture as well as wonderful mosaics and frescoes. Besides you may see the ancient graves of the first Russian Princes. Since 1990 Sofiya Cathedral is on the geritage list of UNESCO.
