Kyiv Top 10 - a 70-page illustrated guidebook, full of pictures and stories on the city’s most prominent places. Besides Ukrainian and Russian, it's available in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Polish. Online price: 30 Hr ($6)
Touring Kyiv - a detailed 224-page guidebook on the sight-seeing places, with maps. Includes a lot of useful information, including places to go out and accommodation tips. It also contains basic language survival guide. Available in English and German. Online price: 60 Hr ($12)
you can buy them in bookstores across the town (the most centrally located are: Znannya, on 14 Khreshchatyk or Naukova Dumka, 4, Hrushevsky St.) or you can order them through the company's online shop (will save about 50% of the retail price).

p.s. unfortunately, the prices are steadely going up for everything, including books. the current(May 2008) price is 96 HR. but it's still cheaper than to buy in stores.

In the end of XI century the monk of the monastery went to Vizantia, the center of Christian religion of those times. It was given regulations to the monastery how to live and to preach. Since those times it is rules for every Eastern Slavic Church. So, history of Orthodox in Russia and Ukraine began here, in Kiev.

The place, dominated by Bohdan Khmelnytsky, that is facing entered it of the cathedral St-Sophie is very beautiful, with a point of view on St.-Michael.

In the place where the complex is situated, in accordance with legend, Yaroslav Mudry had a victory in the battle in XI century. In honour of the event he ordered to build Cathedral to Sofiya of Vizantia. In XVII century the cathedral was the center of the monastery. Since 1930 the complex is a museum. The complex is situated in Sofiyskaya Square between Golden Gate and Mikhaiovsky Monastery areas. The entrance fee is UAH 2 (EUR 0.3). Besides you pay for entrance to the cathedral UAH 12 (EUR 1.7) and for climbing up to the bell tower UAH 10 (EUR 1.45). Photos on the complex territory is available but forbidden inside the cathedral.

Underneath the Friendship Arch there is a sculpture made of bronze and depicts a Russian and Ukrainian worker holding up The Soviet Order of Friendship of Peoples. if you ask why workers? Well, it was time of Soviet Union when workers had a fame of country's builders, although I think farmer should be a representetive of Ukraine.
