More about Airth Castle Hotel And Spa
Our stay at Airth Castle Hotel was a disaster from the beginning. We arrived at 3pm and had to wait until 4 to be given a key to our room. On the way to the room we had to walk over dirty towels, etc. that were laying in the hallway. The room was ok, but was not at all what we had expected. It was an average bargain hotel room. Floors were very squeaky. No ammenities that were listed on website were in the room. The shower was a single stream of water that pounded down from the ceiling. We enquired about breakfast, and was told that we had to pay an extra 15 pounds per person, but when we checked out the next morning, our reciept clearly showed that our room included breakfast. We were asked to pay at check-in, which we did, in cash. However, when we checked out they could not find any record of us paying.
It appears that the hotel has been upgraded over the last few months and there are still plans for more improvements, however, there is little that can be done about the fact that the hotel sits in the midst of an oil refinery, power station, motorways and some of the biggest electricity pylons I've ever seen. There is a housing estate immediately beside the hotel. It may well be in its own grounds but it certainly doesn't offer any kind of isolation. Don't be fooled by the hotel website - the hotel and the castle are seperate buildings and there are often functions held there (business during the week and weddings at the weekends) which means you can't even get in to have a wander about. The spa consists of two small rooms as well as the gym and pool which are adequate but I would hardly say it merits the term "spa". On the plus side the room was clean, the glasshouse restaurant is nice and the staff are attentive and friendly. There are plenty of cheap packages and special offers but there are good reasons for that and if have a few drinks the costs start to look a lot higher.
If you want a break in a castle I'm afraid you'll probably be disappointed.
What a fab bargain!
My family and I have just returned from a 2 night stay at the hotel and we were extremely satisfieed with the hotel and facilities. We were travelling with a young baby and the staff were very friendly and did their best to cater for our needs. We got a very cheap deal from the internet and had a large room with use of the spa and a full breakfast.
The hotel is ideally situated inbetween glasgow and edinburgh. If you are looking to stay in a castle in the middle of nowhere then this is not the place for you.
Overall had a great time and would recommend it to friends and family.
Arriving at the hotel it looks good - we entered reception and that area is very nice. We were told that a large group were in the hotel and as they had been noisy we had been given a room in the Castle - sounds good - we went over and asked where our room was. Room 3 - up dozens of winding stairs to enter what must be the coldest dampest room I have ever seen - tiny bed, black mould on the wall, a rotten window looking directly at a wall - literally no view just a wall 6 inches from the window, damp bathroom and broken shower. Didnt even put our bags down.
We were reallocated a room in the modern spa building, the room was nice enough - Travel Lodge style - none of the extras listed on the website though like cd player, robe etc and very poor and budget decor and fittings. They were correct about the noise it was awful and you can hear every word people in adjoining rooms are saying.
The spa facility is just a hotel leisure complex but the spa staff were fantastic as were the treatments - this should be built on and reception staff should learn from these folk as they were great.
Food at night The Glasshouse was very disappointing over done and not a great menu at all, breakfast was cold, no juice and a bit of a rabble - however waiting staff were first class.
Check out staff were trully terrible showed no care at all about whether we had enjoyed our stay or not and didnt once smile, use names, say thanks etc.
Very disappointing even on a good price deal and definately will not be back.
Nice rooms, Crappy resturant service
The rooms were real nice, but the resturant service sucked. Could not make reservations until 8:ooPM, then had to wait an hour to get service. Food was medocre and expensive. It was so far out of town there was no way to get to someplace to eat.
