Information about Ashford
I am planning a trip to the uk [ from Australia ] next year. Have chosen Ashford as one of my destinations. Has anyone any info about this town. Good pubs and places to eat, things to do and see etc. Are there any locals out there who would like a drink with a lonely traveller. All help will be great and thanks in advance.

To be honest I'm not sure why you have chosen Ashford ! I live about 30 miles from Ashford and unless you have a specific reason for wanting to stay there, there are many nicer places to stay in the UK. Ashford is in Kent, which is a great county; the Garden of England. Nearby, Canterbury is wonderful to explore and you're conveniently located to travel into London or across to France via the Tunnel.
But Ashford... you could do better.

I agree with Ian Im afraid, Ashford is an ok town, but there really isnt anything of specific interest there! As Ian says its a great base for exploring nearby places, theres some beautiful countryside around Ashford - Pluckley is a small village thats quite close by - they say one of the most haunted in the UK?!?
Ashford is really a town, that they are still in the process of "sprucing" up, its a mass new homes town at the moment, and it has some good shopping....thats about it imho!
Take a look at (whitecliff62) Cliffs page on Ashford he has some good info on Ashford....personally I would reccommend that you stay in Canterbury, Dover or Folkestone.

I agree with the other two, but having said that Ashford is well placed to visit the other places from and also add Tenterden to the list of nice places.
There are a few VT members in Kent who are fairly active and I am sure we could arrange a meet when you come.
Kent is a very good choice of area to visit.

Thanks to everyone for your help. About Ashford... I chose it because it seemed like a nice smallish town. I don't really want the hectic pace of a big city eg. Canterbury which I would rather take a day trip to. I live on the coast here in Queensland so not really interested in a sea side town. I really want something right in the countryside where I can see nice villages, castles etc. If anyone can think of a better place please let me know. I also want easy access to the Eurostar for a day trip to Paris. I will have a hire car and intend spending lots of time driving around seeing the sights and I would love to catch up with any local vt members as I will be travelling alone. I will be staying for a week in Scotland and a few days in the Cotswolds before I get to Kent. So thanks again any helpful tips will be appreciated.
