Devonshire Arms, Beeley: Modern design meets olde England

We went here for a one night luxury break. It's a cosy traditional inn with rooms, and a restaurant that has floor to ceiling windows - nice and airy in summer. The place isn't cheap, but it is quality without being stuffy or pretentious.

Just because it's an old inn, doesn't mean it's stuck in a time-warp. The place keeps the traditional feel, but doesn't seem tired because of bright, modern fabrics on the dining chairs and interesting colour schemes in the bedrooms. It has a very "county" atmosphere, with copies of Christies art sale catalogues in the bedrooms for you to browse, and drawings by Emma Tennant (related to the Duchess of Devonshire, who owns the hotel). Breakfast is excellent, and included in the price (which in the end helps to make the place good value).
