Peace And Quiet.: A Friend's Field In Armadale.
2011 saw us visiting the very north of Scotland for the second time. Our first night's destination on the north coast was Armadale, a few miles east of Bettyhill, where a work associate of Nick's had very kindly offered us the use of his field to park the van in for a couple of nights.
What a wonderful location, on a quiet little road looking over to beautiful Armadale Bay. What could be better?
We enjoyed superb weather during our stay here so were even able to sit out in the glorious sun.
Our hosts invited us for drinks both nights and it was nice to get to know them and learn some local information.
Unique Quality: The highlight was on the second day while we were sitting out and the village pig wandered by. This pig was badly treated by it's original owners and now simply roams free through the village, being fed by the locals. It was certainly a fine specimen and great fun to watch it snuffling it's way along the road. She even posed for us, as well!!

Grummore (Caravan Club Site): Set On The Shores Of Loch Naver
Although we didn't stay on this site, we rather liked the look of it, until I looked the price up!! In peak season, for two adults it was in excess of £13 and there are no toilet or shower facilities. You are paying for the remoteness with it's beautiful lochside location and easy access to the loch.
The grass pitches were empty; at first we thought the site was closed but there were a few outfits on hard standings at the other end, away from the loch. Yes, it had rained for quite a while so I guess the grass was too wet to camp on.
Unique Quality: Free fly fishing, small on site shop and nature all around you. Pitching is on 2 acres of grass and hard standings, mostly sloping slightly. Also, sheep roam freely here so check your shoes before entering your outfit!!
No toilet block and a private, treated water supply.
Booking advisable at peak times.
Open April - Oct.
Members only.

Caravan Club CL.: Can't Beat The Views......
I couldn't believe it when I found a CL (small campsite, certificated location, that only takes 5 units but you have to belong to the Caravan Club and Camping and Caravanning Club to use these) in the exact location we were looking at.!!
So, for our first two nights on Scotland's very north coast, we stayed at Skerray, a remote village with a small harbour, a thatched roof post office and a few houses.
The site was right by the sea, exposed to the elements, but what a location! From our pitch, we had spectacular views out to the rugged cliffs and rocks in the bay.
Unique Quality: Only facilities here are a tap and chemical toilet emptying. But those views!!!!
We had an idea we may have been able to get our boat out but the sea was so wild and the coast so rocky, it was a none starter.
We paid the vast sum of £6 a night.
