The Ancient Unicorn: Historic coaching inn

In May 07 my partner and I fancied a night away, not too far from our home in York, and decided to explore the North Pennine moorland around Teesdale. We both like things traditional, so we booked into The Ancient Unicorn Inn, an old coaching inn in the village of Bowes. Once it was on the A66, the main transpennine route in this part of the world, but now the village has been by-passed, so it is lovely and quiet. The hills and valleys around Bowes are breathtaking, and so it's not surprising that most of the guests at the inn are hill walkers and cyclists. The north-south-running long-distance trail of the Pennine Way passes through Bowes, as does the W2W coast-to-coast cycle route. Our room was modern and well appointed, but best of all was the low beams and roaring fire in the main bar and dining area. Landlady Joanne Foster provides lovely home-cooked meals, which we washed down with some very well-kept traditional ales. Overall it was excellent value and a very friendly place to stay while exploring the great outdoors.

Home-cooked food in a gloriously old-world coaching inn

Bowes Moor Hotel: Hotel With A History

OK, if you want to stay somwhere with a bit of an eerie past, try the Bowes Moor Hotel. It's a couple of miles East of Stainmore Summit (and West of Bowes Village) and stands on the moor right by the A66.

Many years ago the chef there murdered his wife and hid her body in the freezer in the kitchen! Don't worry, the staff and owners have all changed (probably more than once) since then, and it's not a regular occurance! Still, it gives the place a bit of edge, no? ;-)
