Braemar Lodge Hotel: Best Accommodation of our '05 trip

The Lodge provides hotel accommodation including breakfast but there are also self-catering cabins surrounding the Lodge.
The hotel bar is the epitome of a country lodge. The roaring fire, panelled walls, bay window seat near the fire and a good pint was definitely a bonus to our trip. Our cabin was only about 50 m away from the lodge, so while our dinner was in the oven we enjoyed a relaxing drink at the bar. Perhaps too many, as I overcooked the chicken and never heard the end of it!
If you hike, it's a great launch point for trails of various degrees of difficulty. If you want relaxation, it is also great for this. We went site seeing at a leisurely pace. A short walk to the oustkirts of town is Braemar Castle. It was worth the 15 minute walk, but it's not the best castle I've seen.
There's a beautiful river with falls flowing through the centre of the village and a great tourist centre with clothing and souvenier shops. If you have a self-catering cabin, as we did (although the owner included breakfast in the lodge for us), it was great to go to the local butchers to get your fresh produce for dinner and the variety store/market for a little vino and munchies.
I think more than a two night visit may be a bit long, although we didn't take any opportunity to go to the other hotel pubs in town. I'd been to them on my '99 visit and they too are very nice.

Unique Quality: Panelled bar with fireplace.
Very friendly Irish owners.
Beautiful views.
Off the main street.

Callater Lodge Guest House: Well appointed B&B, I recommend it

We stayed one night at the Callater Lodge Guest House in March 2004.

At that time the B&B had been recently opened (I think) and it was clear that the owner were determined to put together an excellent accomodation.

Decor and furnishings were warm and welcoming, our room was well appointed and comfortable even though it was not very big.

The owners were very friendly and helpful, we really enjoyed our stay there.

I noticed that since then it has been awarded 4 stars by the AA and the Scottish Tourist Board. I have to agree that the Callander Lodge is well above average, certainly one of the best B&Bs I stayed in Scotland.

Looking at their current price list it may be a bit more expensive than other B&Bs, but still very good value for money.

Unique Quality: Well managed B&B in a lovely Victorian House in Braemar itself.
