Rough Tor - Charlotte Dymond
Visitors to Rough Tor will notice a capped Memorial Stone just by the edge of the stream by the car park, on the right as you walk up, left on the return. This stone was erected to the memory of Charlotte Dymond, who was murdered at this very spot on Sunday 14th April, 1844 by Matthew Weekes.
The full story of this tragic story can be read here:
Charlotte Dymond Crime Scene The inscription on the memorial reads:
"This Monument erected by public subscription in memory of Charlotte Dymond, murdered by Matthew Weekes on Sunday April 14th, 1844.
One hundred and sixty years, and it is still a site of speculation. Did Matthew do it, or did he not? Only He, Charlotte and God know!
