Travel Tips for Castle Combe

Castle Combe - No castle, just a beautiful village

by Airpunk

The cotswolds - a region which became rich in medeival ages. But when the wool trading business became less important during the centuries, also the prosperity of the cotswold came to an end. Many villages stopped development so that some still seem to be in medieval ages. One of them is Castle Combe, which was the last station of my "Mad Max" tour in 2006.

The interesting points of the village are the old market cross, the church and a roman bridge leading over a small river. The castle does not exist anymore and its ruins are on the grounds of an hotel.

"Dr. Doolittle's Village"

Here we are again on the Mad Max Tour with second cute little village. This one again dates back to the 13th century. And I think it is the most authentic I've seen. Thatched roofs, narrow streets, hidden street signs, parking away from the village. Efforts have been made to keep it authentic looking.
We had about 45 minutes to stroll around. The most impressive sights were the stream and the Roman bridge across it and the local Minster with it's ancient graveyard.
Apparently, one of the houses was used for the original Dr. Doolittle movie, but which one was never pointed out. There is also a resort of some sort back in the woods but entrance was restricted. There is some mention of an auto racing course nearby but no sight of it was seen or heard

"A Typical Dwelling in Castle Combe"

It's a rather small area and if you hurry you can see everything in a few minutes. But, that is not the object. Take time to sit, think, imagine, make believe, even pretend you are Dr. Dolittle. It is worth it.

"The Center of the Village"

As in most old communities the church is the center of society. Even though it's a small village the church is large, but old. We walked around it and as is customary the graveyard is adjacent. The next two pictures show the church and graves.

"Church and Wall"

How can something last so long? Those people really were artisans and those who have maintained the structures share their skill.
