It’s a long while since I stayed local, overnight to write a review, and as a seasoned reviewer decided to stay at the Old George at Chollerford.
First impressions very good trip advisor sign on the entrance, checked in and headed off to the room.
The room was well decorated with all the normal extras including full, iron, and board, tea and coffee and basic toiletries. Bedding clean and well presented,
Due to waiting for digital switchover only 3 channels on TV BBC1, 2 and ITV1. Missed my big brother fix!!!
Excellent gardens and views, short walk back to Restaurant and bar area.
On the evening you are asked for a time to sit, and the meal was a choice of a 3 course menu with Coffee. Cost around £19.95, there did not seem to be a choice if you wanted something else or less.
What was lacking was a maître d’ to control what was happening , this was particularly showing up on breakfast, but will come to that later, the staff present did work hard to control orders etc.
The restaurant is on two levels overlooking the gardens and river. And if it is busy you may need to sit in the lounge first.
The bar was well stocked but a bit pricey, no specials or deals on to keep people in that area, furnishings were comfortable and the décor well presented.
They operate a no smoking ban throughout the hotel with a fine of £100, not sure how they police this.
Now the breakfast which runs from 8:00am to 9:30am on a Saturday, although it looks like there are 90 covers overs the 2 levels, we sat down at 8:50am and it was 9:05am before someone asked us what we wanted to order, cereals and fruit juice are in an off shot from the restaurant to self-serve, and as a person who does not want these but straight to a full breakfast, it was 9:15am before coffee and toast was delivered and 9:30 before the main breakfast.
Watching the staff there seemed to be no urgency in customer service, and tables where guests had being sitting, dishes were left unattended and not cleared. I counted 32 covers not cleared whilst waiting, again lack of a maître d or someone to co-ordinate servings, the staff seemed left to their own devices,
Overall the hotel seemed to be catering for bus and coach parties and was reflected throughout, Happy to recommend if on a trip or staying to use it as a base for visiting the area for walking, site seeing etc. but be prepared to wait at meal times!!
