More about Craig-Y-Nos Castle
Loved every minute as did our dog!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Craig-y-Nos. The castle has loads of character which is set in beautiful surroundings. We particularly liked staying here as it is so pet-friendly.
Our dog played with the owner's dog one evening while we were eating. (Food was great). The castle was being renovated but in no way was our enjoyment spoilt. It can be informal but we prefer that anyway. We came here to wind down and this is the perfect place to do so. Just ask Shep!
Wedding from HELL!
My partner and I were really excitied about attending a wedding at Craig Y Nos Castle. To our dismay that excitment was short lived. Upon arrival we were told to congregate in the so-called Bar for pre-drinks. Adjacent to the bar is the kitchens as I ask a member of the staff (later). There were around 50 guests in the bar area and all we could here was a lady voice swearing and cursing about the father of the Bride! We later found out that she was the wedding co-ordinator. The standard of food was appalling, a zoo would feed their animals better dishes. The staff were short and abrut and the dress standards were to say the least casual scruffy! The overall setting was nicely set-up but thats the only positive feedback I can comment on. My partner and I did not stay at the castle, but after talking to some friends who had stayed apparently it got worse. Their breakfast the next morning was slop and their were dogs walking around well food was present. I would definately not recommened Craig y nos castle for any wedding unless you a looking for a quick divorce! P.S. Byo toilet paper :o(
my fantastic wedding day
I got married there on March 17th, prior to my wedding day we went to craiy y nos on several occassions to to finalise the wedding arrangements, we were always greeted with polite and very friendly staff who done their upmost to help & advise us
On the wedding day everyone was exceptional, very organised, helpful and always close by if needed, they really helped take the stress out of the day. The theatre where i got married really lookes fantastic and they layed it out exactly as i described to them, when i walked into function room for the 1st time i was shocked how beautiful it looked, they had done a brilliant job of setting up the tables & added small touches that really finished off the room. The food was fantastic and the bridal room was beautiful. Every part of craig y nos was very clean and well kept my wedding dress is proof of that (its immaculate)
I would like to thanks Jason and Alison for all their help in makind my day so special
Craig y Nos ...The once beautiful home of Madam Patti
Craig Y Nos...........the once beautiful home of the famous opera singer Madame Patti is set in beautiful countryside and does look quite imposing from the outside.
BUT before planning on staying there please note the following:-
1. The hotel does not have any official star rating and as such is not monitored/inspected by hotel inspectors. Therefore the standards may not be quite what you expect from a hotel costing in the region of £100 per night.
2. The staff are not professional and give the impression that they have never worked in a hotel environment. From what we could gather the hotel is owned by a Bachelor and the staff are probably either friends of the owner and people picked up from the local job centre. None of the staff wore uniform and everything was very casual/informal which was a little disappointing.
3. The hotel is undergoing extensive renovations and even on a Sunday there were workmen in the grounds. The main castle rooms have already been renovated but there are rooms in an annex and these are undergoing extensive work. We stayed in room 16 which was in the annex and had to walk through a building site to get to our room!!! However, once inside our room was beautiful and really tastefully done. It had antique furniture and was very comfortable indeed. The only problem was that there is a clock in the Courtyard that kept us awake all night with its chimes every 15 minutes!!
4.We were aware of at least 2 other couples who complained about their rooms. Not quite sure where exactly they were in the Castle (maybe nurse's quarter) but they had booked over 1 year in advance and had paid £100 for the room only to find 2 camp beds, wash basin and 1 cup! This room was also not ensuite.
There are a various types of accomodation in this hotel and some are a little shabby. There are dormetry type rooms and also basic rooms which share bathrooms. Then on the other hand there are other rooms which, like ours are lovely. from what we could gather it really is the luck of the draw which one you end up with as the hotel will promise you one type and then when you arrive you find that you have been given something quite different. I think that we were lucky.
5. The food in the Breakfast room was okay but the staff were very disorganised and when we entered we had trouble finding a table free of dirty dishes!!! We also had a wait a while for them to cook the breakfast.
6. Although this called a 'castle' it is more of a gothic mansion with a few spires. There are no rooms to wander around except the for the main bar, function room and Madame Patti's empty theatre. To call it a castle is a little misleading.
7. The car park was very small and we had difficulty parking. There is an overflow car park at the rear of the hotel but this is again in the middle of a building site.
8. No room service, no 24 hour reception.
9. No phone in the room.
All in all, even though our room was lovely, the whole experience was a bit of a disappointment. The service was the greatest let down and it is great pity. This hotel could really be top notch with the right kind of management. It is crying out for some quality staff. Who knows, maybe once the rooms are all sorted out they will apply for official star rating.
To summarise, for what it is, the hotel is very expensive. Charging £100 per night is too much. For this you would expect 4* or 5*. Don't expect any high standard and you wont be disappointed.
Fantastic In Every Way
We held our wedding at the castle and couldnt have asked for a more romantic location or friendlier, more helpful staff.
Individual requests are catered for without the any fuss and you are made to feel like friends from the instant you get in touch.
The castle is in the most picturesque location and the rooms are decorated to a wonderful standard and cater for everyone from single guests to families to large groups.
The food is again outstanding-as was commented upon by every one of our guests, they can cater for all pallets, from kids meals to the venison or lamb shank that we enjoyed.
I have never stayed at a hotel that has made me feel so at home and relaxed (I highly recommend the leather sofa in front of the real woodburner in the bar for the perfect evening-you wont want to move!!!).
From nights away to the wedding of your dreams, Craig y Nos castle is the perfect location and should be considered by anyone wanting to
make there special day or break away even more special.

My Dream Wedding
I can not believe some of the rubbish that has been written above. Obviously these people have no idea about welsh heritage and the beautiful countryside. My Husband and I recently got married and Craig y Nos CASTLE (It is a castle) and had an absolutely fabulous time. Being a Welsh girl I had visited a number of venues to hold my dream wedding, however I found a lot of them to be over priced and run by unapproachable, cold staff!!! We contemplated going away to get married, however we fell upon Craig y Nos and both myself and Husband fell in love with the castle and surrounding straight away. Also it brought back a lot of memories for my husband who used to play around there when he was young.
We currently live in Ireland now and it was very hard to arrange everything from over there, however Alison and all the staff made this really easy for me and accommodated us all the way. Even to the point of Alison staying on until gone 10pm one night to meet with us as we were on a flying trip to Wales.
Our food was also perfect and can’t see how it could be called slop!!! All of my family and husband’s family thoroughly enjoyed it and we all felt full after our Welsh feast of Roast beef and welsh cake trifle!! Both sets of parents also met with Leighton and I for lunch on Sunday!
The Opera theatre was out of this world. I left the decorating of the Reception room to Alison and Claire who did a fabulous job and everything was how I wanted it to be.
The rooms, I thought were fantastic and most of the Castle was taken over by my friends and family that night and I have had no complaints. Of course there is building work going on, however this is to make the Castle even more special!!!
I could go on for ages about Craig Y Nos and all the staff but I don’t think there will be enough room. I just want to say that without Alison and all the staff I wouldn’t have had my dream wedding. It was an absolutely fantastic day and they all made it really special for me. Every one of my wedding guests has commented on how wonderful everything was and I urge you to visit the Castle yourself! You won’t be disappointed.
Thanks Alison, Claire and all the staff we will be coming back on our one year wedding anniversary so get the Champaign out!

perfect wedding day
we got married at craig y nos on 31st january 2007 and it was the best day of our lives. this was all down to the staff at the castle. they are the most friendly, relaxed, accomodating people, and will do anything for you.
when i first met with the wedding co-ordinators i was blown away by their professionalism and experience. they gave me so many ideas for my wedding day, but at the same time allowed me the freedom to have the day exactly as i wanted it, even down to putting candles all over the opera theatre (even though it is grade 1 listed!) the theatre is so beautiful and charming; all of my guests were taken aback by it. it is the most unique place to get married.
the food was lovely and everyone commented on it. it was served quickly and they had no problem accomodating some guests with dietry requirements (includng a pregnant, diabetic, vegetarian bridesmaid!). the wedding planner told me to ask these guests to chose anything they wanted, even if it wasn't on the menu, and the chef then prepared it specially for them. this is just one example of how the staff treat you like an individual.
before the wedding day the staff allowed many of the guests to visit the castle for a private tour of the rooms so they could personally choose which one they wanted to stay in. this was then honoured for over a year until the day of the wedding, even when arrangements had to be changed.
the rooms have been renovated to an extremley high standard; the bathrooms in particular are astonishing in their luxury and detail. although there is building work continuing, this in no way impaired our day; in fact i don't think my guests even noticed. the work is progressing well, and we saw an improvement each time we visited the castle before the wedding (which was alot!) the grounds are also magnificent, allowing for some stunning wedding photos.
if you decide to book your wedding at craig y nos the wedding planners will have all the time in the world for you. they will know you by name and remember you and the wedding each time you call. they will always be on hand to help at ay time, as they were for us, and we still keep in touch with them today, 4 months on. compared to other venues we looked at for our wedding it was definatley the most reasonable and flexible to our requirements.
my only complaint was that i didn't see any ghosts!
if you are looking for the perfect, stress free wedding day in a beautiful, unique setting, look no further.
Our perfect wedding
Thanks to the wedding co-ordinators and staff at Craig-y-Nos Castle we had a fabulous wedding on 26th August 2006. The staff were great and could not do enough for us, helping us through the planning of the wedding to the actual day.
We decided to have our wedding at the castle as a result of so many recommendations from friends.
The rooms we stayed in were to a high standard, comfortable and very clean. On that actual wedding day no one could have done a better job. All the staff worked very hard to make our dream wedding come true. The food was out of this world and the staff were very polite and could not do enough for us and our guests. All the guests commented on how they enjoyed our day and loved the castle and the beautiful surroundings i.e. Brecon and various attractions and nature walks.
Prior to our wedding we had also stayed at the castle, which again was a very enjoyable experience - again the staff were great and the food excellent. They have a good variety of food which is excellent value.
If we had to do it all again we would hold it at craig-y-nos. I would highly recommend the castle for a wedding or even just a stay over. It is full of history and is full of character and the staff are delightful.
Our magical Christmas Wedding at Craig Y Nos
My Husband and I got married on 21st December 2006 at Craig Y Nos and it was everything I dreamed it would be. All of my guests have since told me that it was the best setting of wedding they have been to, as night fell I walked down the aisle into the theatre, the staff had excelled themselves and decorated the theatre with twinkling fairy lights and christmas trees, mulled wine welcomed my guests who admittedly were cold in the theatre but for such an old building is to be expected.
The food was a traditional cooked dinner which was lovely, and a small buffet later on was exactly what I wanted. From start to finish Alison the wedding coordinator did everything that I wanted and there was never a problem, she was a diamond on the day calming mine and my husband nerves!
The Suite was great, ok so I've stayed in plusher rooms in other parts of the world but for my wedding day I didn't want a boring, impersonal function suite in a hotel, I wanted family and friends to relax in charming surroundings and they sure did!!!!
Sitting by the log fire watching the boys bringing the logs in from the frosty gardens, we felt a million miles from the outside world, the staff never rush you out, even at 3 in the morning when trying to get the Best man and Bridesmaid to drink up so the staff can go home!
Thanks for everything

The perfect wedding planner!
When we looked at the usual wedding venues we were typically faced with traditional hotels and wanted something far more special to remember our day. One look at Craig-y-nos told us that we had found the right looking venue but the icing on the cake was the family run feel to the place and the caring staff. We were lucky (the wedding was in December) as Craig-y-nos had just taken on a new chef who spent time with us catering to our needs and the quality of the food was very high. The best bit for us however was our brilliant wedding planner (Alison) who could never do enough for us and never said no to any request. She made the whole 12 month planing period a joy and the day even more so. We can't thank them enough.
