I stayed in The Waterloo several times in 2009 whilst working away from home in nearby Bracknell. I had found the Bracknell Hotels over-expensive and anonynous unfriendly places to stay on my own. The big plus about the Waterloo Hotel was the friendly, well-meaning staff who run it day to day and the more reasonable pricing that they were able to offer.
The hotel is located in a suburban area round the small village of Crowthorne a short car ride away from the big town of Bracknell. There are not many places to stay in Crowthorne and this is one of them.
OK, the internet was not free (and did not work when I tried it), there was no free gym or pool and you couldn't get Channel five on the TV - but it catered for all my needs. The room was clean and comfortable with coffee, tea and a kettle, the bath and shower great for a luxurious soak. Whenever I was a bit awkward or had a special need, the staff were flexible and accomodating and put themselves out to make me comfortable.
It has all-night portering, which is necessary if you arrive or return from work in the midnight hours and that is one thing that gives it an edge on "The Dial House" B&B just down the road.
They occasionally have "special offers" or deals that can save you money.
The breakfasts are very pleasant with good coffee and well cooked food and while the hotel's decor has a slightly "worn" look to it, I prefer that to the smell of newly carpeted glue-tiles that you get in "refurbished" hotels.
The rooms vary a bit in quality and maintenance - some are better than others. I found one of the rooms too warm for my tastes and they moved me to one that was better.
There is a spacious car park.
I would recommend it and would stay there again.
Unique Quality: Friendly, comfortable and clean with an all-night porter. Reasonably priced.
Directions: On the corner of Duke's Ride and Waterloo Road.
Calling this Hotel the Corus Hotel Bracknell is a joke. It is bang in the middle of Crowthorne, which is handy for the Road Research Laboratory or if you are visiting a patient in Broadmoor, but Bracknell hotels are much more handy for Bracknell!
This is the only large chain hotel in Crowthorne to my knowledge and has a reasonable restaurant although I have been to it recently. It also has a bar attached to it.
Unique Quality: Lying about their location!
Directions: Up Dukes Ride from Crowthorne Station. Past Wellington College. On the same side of the road as both of them. If you get to Crowthorne High Street you have gone too far!
