The Mason Arms: Not Dufftowns Finest
Someone has written that there is no real reason to stay over in Dufftown. As most people visit it for the distilleries and public transport (esp in Winter) ain't great, staying over because you've been drinking is a reason. On the plus side the Masons is cheap (£45 twin B&B) and does a decent breakfast, plus I reasoned that if you've a had a decent drink you're not too fussy. Against this you have to weigh the place looking a mess, being a mess and most notably to me it stank throughout of dog (a sweaty sock smell some dogs have, wasn't till I heard it howling in the morning that it clicked). Didn't drink in the place.
So cheap and ok if you're planning a decent drink but don't spend much time in there!
Unique Quality: Quite cheap. Decent breakfast. Smells of dog (the whole building not the breakfast)

Commercial Hotel: Don't Really Need to stay over
You dont really have to stay over in Dufftown as it is so accessible to Aberdeen. Unless you have special reasons, (staying over to watch the pipe band practise, highland games or you are simply too tired to drive), the recommended place will be Fife Arms Hotel. It has en-suite rooms. The hotel also has its own restaurant. Open 365days a year.
Unique Quality: Very Small Hotel... but it is rare to find hotel anyway in Dufftown.

Loch Park Adventure Centre: Nearest Hostel In The Next Town
Personally, I honestly don't really think you'll be needing accommodation if you're just visiting Dufftown or its vicinity - it's basically a very 'day-trip' kind of place. However, if you're planning to visit more distilleries not too far away (all dotted across the Whisky Trail)or there's something on like the Dufftown Highland Games or The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, I suppose it might be more worthwhile to stay then.
I've not stayed over in Dufftown or the neighbouring towns before because I drove all the way back to Aberdeen, but for your benefit, I've checked out the accommodation & found the Loch Park Adventure Centre to be the nearest hostel, in the neighbouring town of Keith (it's not the next nearest town to Dufftown because there are others nearer, but it's the nearest one from the North, & also the one with a hostel).
This is a 3 star Hostel for groups using the facilities at the Centre .. so I guess you'll have to go for some 'adventure' if you want to stay here. It's located more specifically in village of Drummuir (2 miles from centre of Keith).
