balloon festival

by nikianne

We would like to visit the Balloon Festival at Ashton Court Estate in August this year and would like to know of any hotels/B&B's within walking distance as we don't want to take the car if possible. Anyone know of any???

thanks in advance

nikianne

Yes, I agree the Balloon Festival website is unhelpful about transport AND accommodation. I have no car and have never been myself. Anyway, with 100 massive balloons you will see them floating around from most vantage points in the area ;-)

When is this balloon festival then? Where is it being held. Is it far from a railway station?

The nearest accomodation would be the Best Western hotel in Clifton. Any hotels in the Clifton area would suffice but are quite pricey. They will be within a half hour walk.

Otherwise extra buses from the centre are usually laid on for the occasion.

Alternatively get the 8 or 9 bus to Clifton and ask for directions.

Hello
www.bristolfiesta.co.uk is the website but any hotel in the Clifton area would normally be best. It is a half hour walk across the Clifton Suspension Bridge from Clifton to Ashton Court. However, it may be wise to check out if they are planning to close the bridge which they did do last year for the Orange Music Festival.
The bridge is beautiful and old so when you have a few hundred people all falling into a 'march like step' walking across the bridge I guess it aint considered safe.
There is a hotel closer, just around the corner from Ashton Court, "Redwood Lodge" but not sure of prices etc.
The festival is impressive so well worth a visit.
Have fun :-)

Travel Tips for Bristol

Avon River...

by coceng

From The St. Peter Church, I glanced towards the Avon River...There are some 'industrial' buildings to be seen which are just so nice to my eyes !
I could see some people just walking their dogs, strolling with their loved ones...

Another suspension bridge

by TheLongTone

Gaol Ferry Bridge

Clifton suspension bridge is so well-known that it even puts in an appearance on commemorative £1 coins. Bridge fans may enjoy another Bristol suspension bridge, this slightly camp footbridge over the Avon (or, to be exact , the New Cut) connecting Bedminster to Spike Island (the island created between the Avon and the floating harbour). Built in 1935 on the site of an old ferry crossing which carried 10,000 passengers a week, hence the name.

A little bit of France

by KennetRose about Street markets

When I moved to Bristol from London in 1994, the thing I really missed was a good street market. I'd been used to buying high-quality and unusual fruit and veg. from Portobello Road.

There still isn't anything like that. But a few years ago a Farmers Market began in Corn Street on a Wednesday. Since then other markets have appeared - there was one on a Monday when I visited in December 2002. It had a French . The one shown - dried fruits, herbs and spices, cheeses, wines.

Wednesday Farmers Market - much the same, plus locally produced meats, honey etc.

LINE UP FOR THE BUS

by Duffelgirl

Bus company called 'First Cityline' serves to link most of Bristols' suburbs. You will be lucky if some-one hasn't ripped the bus timetable off the bus stop post, and even luckier if the bus arrives when it is supposed to.
I find its best to find the right bus stop (each bus route has a corresponding number and will be stated on the bus stop - grab a route map from the tourist info centre) and just wait until the bus turns up.
There is small bus information depot opposite the 'Colston Hall', you can buy bus cards (helpful if you use the service a lot) and ask for information.
It can all be a bit baffling if you are not sure which road is the nearest stop to where you want to be - if in doubt, ask a friendly looking local - often the easiest way to obtain good, sound advice.
The web address below is good for bus times.

Old-fashioned lunch bar

by KennetRose about The Kings Head

Lovely, genuinely 17th century pub in a part of the city that was derelict not so long ago but which is now enjoying a revival. There's a long, narrow bar serving excellent beer and a tiny dining room that suggests a boat.

Very popular with lunching workers and can get crowded. Pigs in blankets - a kind of superior hot dog with cheese.
