Travel Tips for Bristol
The Bear Pit
by TheLongTone
or the Saint James Barton roundabout and underpass, as it is properly known. Not a Favorite thing at all. The ghastly collision between modern unban planning and ancient city that spawned Broadmead is aptly terminated to the North by this sunken urban wasteland.
The charming meadow flowers are are the result of intervention by the prsc who do much good work. What the bear pit is notororious for is congregations of street people. And indeed I was assailed by an inhoherent alkie twenty seconds after taking this photo. Jerk thought I was photographing him. But generally, certainly during the daytime, its fine. As indeed are the street people...here because it's hard by the bus station, because the magistrates court is nearby too (it's the po-mo confection behind the bus-station), because its the gateway to Stokes Croft: because that's who urban spaces like this are for.
I hate going below street level to cross roads, especially when the layout meeans you are deviating consderably from a straight line. But, on foot, you pretty well can't avoid it here. Curiously, the roundabout itself is in a funny way one of my 'favorite things to do in Bristol' things, but in a very specialised way. You need a decent bike and to get the lights entering it from Stokes Croft absolutely right. Cars eat your dust as you paste round it into St Lewins Mead at a good 20 knots. Reduces the time spent in the vicinity dramatically.

But two real paradises for the shopping lovers are: The Galleries Shopping Centre and St Nicholas Market which used to be the Merchants Guild in the old days.
In the pic part of the huge window of the Bear Factory in The Galleries... unfortunately I wasn't allowed to take a pic inside... everyone who liked when a kid or still likes teddy bears would appreciate this place where you have to choose your furry friend then they stuff, stitch, dress him under your eyes... a plunge in your childhood...
Nempnett Thrubwell
by KennetRose
When VT was about to be relaunched, I made a joke about being able to do a Nempnett Thrubwell page. And I still can't because it doesn't figure in the VT database (neither does Stanton Drew, or the quite substantial nearby village of Chew Magna).
Nempnett Thrubwell nestles in the foothills of the Mendips, close to Blagdon Lake. There's not much there, except a nice little church, but it's such a lovely name, don't you think? :)
for musicals and dances
by mindcrime about Bristol Hippodrome
If you are addicted to musicals and you cant stand away from London’s West End productions you will be very happy that here you can see many famous opera, musical, dance and other famous performances. I didn’t have time to check inside but I took their brochure at their ticket office which is open till 18:00 when there is no performance.
You can call at 0800 587 5007 for bookings and information
