Kellaway Road

by rikseven

I'm an Erasmus student, and I am going to live in Bristol for six months.
I found a beautiful house in Kellaway Road, which seems a quiet place but it is close to Gloucester Road and Southmead, which I heard are dangerous areas.
Do you think Kellaway Road is dangerous as well to live?

Thank you.

If you mean Kellaway Avenue, then no, it's not a 'dangerous' place as such. I would not class Gloucester Road or Southmead as 'dangerous' either, although there may be higher incidents of crime there than some areas of Bristol. Although I don't live in that area, I have walked around both areas at night without incident.

Gloucester Road is not dangerous, it's full of students and young professionals really, there's lots of bars so it's mainly drunk people around. Further up Gloucester Rd when it turns into Filton Avenue can get a little dodgier, but still there's lots of students around.
There's lots of buses around Gloucester Rd heading into town or into UWE, where I assume your placement is.

Travel Tips for Bristol

One of my favourite spots in Bristol is the Birdcage. This is the grounds of St Andrew Church of Clifton. The church was destroyed in the war and only the foundations of church remain and now has been turned into a little park. The central walkway is lined with trees grown into an arch overhead. It is a little oasis on tranquility. If you are in the Clifton area during the summer months take some time out just to walk through the park. Getting away from it all during my lunch break.

Balloon-spotting Bristolians

by aaaarrgh

It was the final Sunday of the Bristol Balloon Festival and I decided to walk to the top of Brandon Hill to see if I could spot any hot-air balloons. However, several hundred Bristolians had the same idea. Brandon Hill is the perfect place to sit and balloon-spot on a dry evening. There are plenty of park benches and a large grassy slope - a perfect amphitheatre. An enterprising ice-cream van was doing a roaring trade.

The Balloon Festival takes place a few miles southwest of Bristol in mid-August. if the weather is ok, dozens of balloons take flight at 6pm. So if it is too windy, or not windy enough, you are not guaranteed a free show :-)

This year (2005) the balloons took-off an hour late. Maybe it was because the wind was not strong enough. Or because the wind was moving towards Bristol Airport - aaaaaarrrgh!!!

In any case, two dozen balloons did take-off, rising slowly into the yellow evening sun and heading off towards Bath. Just about worth waiting for!!

The Ostrich pub. This is by the water at the docks but away from the hustle and bustle of the Watershed et al. Excellent in the summer with plenty of outdoor seating and also makes a cosy winter pub.

Theatrical wine bar and pasta house

by KennetRose about Renato's Taverna dell' Artista

Italian trattoria near the Theatre Royal. Very popular with the theatrical crowd from either side of the curtain, and also with BBC folk out on the razzle.

The walls are lined with signed photographs of everybody who has ever been anybody in British theatre since WW2 - they've all either played here or passed through the Old Vic Theatre School or both.

Chinese - The Mayflower, Kings Square, Kingsdown.
Italian - Vincenzo's Trattoria, Park Street, Clifton.
Steak - The Cattlemans's, Triangle South, Clifton.
Kebab - Samroys Takeaway, Two Mile Hill, Kingswood.
Chicken - Miss Millies, Church Road, Redfield.
Pub Grub - Hauliers Arms, Pilemarsh, Redfield.
All these places are 'no frills'. The emphasis is on quality and good food - not poncey portions and expensive prices. Chinese - Peking Duck
Italian - Vesuvio Pizza (hot & spicy)
Steak - only one choice for me.....the 32 oz T-Bone
Kebab - a £4 kebab with lemon juice, no chilli.
Chicken - Everything!
Pub Grub - good menu, lots of variety and they do an excellent Sunday Roast!
