You can usually get some good rates at the Travelodge in Bedford, especially during the special promotional periods. I had a night here in January 2009 for just £12. You don't get much from a Travelodge hotel, it's a bit like a no-frills airline.
The one in Bedford is not a bad property although it's in a business park so don't expect a view. A taxi from Bedford train station will cost around £5, if you do decide to walk be aware that the last part is up quite a steep hill. There is a limited bus service that goes nearby.
