Travel Tips for Reading

Kennetside paths.

by mwe

If you're walking or cycling, you can get away from Reading's main roads & go to places that motorists & bus passengers don't see.
These pictures are along Kennetside from Duke Street to Sidmouth Street.

There are some pleasant, largely traffic-free, conveniently located, affordable riverside housing areas that are a short walk from all the facilities of Reading's busy town centre.

If you like authentic Spanish Food...

by easyoar about La Tasca

If you like authentic Spanish Food, then don't go to La Tasca in the town centre. I went with a large group, and whilst the people that didn't know what to expect thought the food was OK, the rest of us who did, found the food very disappointing.

If you still feel like eating there, La Tasca can be found just up from Saint Marys Butts church on the same side of the road.

If you want nicer Spanish food, try Picassos (see separate tip). None of it really!

Price is enormously variable as you just order lots of tapas dishes, and the more you order the more it costs.

Reading Abbey

by KennetRose

There are many towns around the world with more touristic ambitions than Reading which would give anything to have Reading Abbey on their patch. They would put up a visitor centre and charge admission.

What's so lovely about the abbey is that it's just there, tucked away amongst the office buildings in an informal setting by the river. On a sunny day it's a wonderful place to sit and eat your lunch, and it has a real gothic feel about it.

Reconstructions suggest that it was once one of England's great buildings. It was a royal retreat and the home of Parliament during times of plague in London

sociolingo's new Reading Page

by sociolingo

Reading is in the Thames Valley about halfway between London and Oxford. It took its name from the saxon for 'Readda's People'. It grew near the meeting place of the Rivers Thames and the Kennet which were the main transport routes through the ancient woodland which covered most of Southern England. It was the place from which the Danes tried to conquer the south of England before they were defeated by King Alfred at Englefield and Ashdown.

Most of the town is 'horrible' new, but if you look you will find some nice buildings and medieval churches nestling in among the concrete and glass. The newest round of building has taken a turn for the better and there are some very stylish buildings going up.
