Travel Tips for Reading

Flowing Springs Pub

by Markyreid

Flowing Springs Pub is located in Sonning on Henley Road. It's about 10 minutes from the city centre of reading. The atmosphere was friendly, food was well priced and large serves. Our order was served promptly and a couple that had arrived earlier were given a free drink each for their order delay. I thought this showed good customer service.

They have an outside beer garden and i imagine this would be fantastic on a sunny summer afternoon. They also had a policy on mobile phones - that is they are not permitted to be used inside the pub.
Warning though, they do have dogs inside so if this concnerns you then it may not be worth you visiting.
Meals were priced from 4 pounds for soup upto about 6 pound 50 for seafood or roast of the day.

Good, honest, Chinese fare

by KennetRose about Hong Hong / Beijing Noodle House

Conjoined twin restaurants under common ownership close to the main shopping drag.

The Hong Hong is a full-blown Chinese restaurant with Thai and Indonesian variants, slightly over-the-top chinoiserie, attentive service and a good atmosphere.

The Beijing Noodle House is a more basic outfit specialising in basic soups and noodle dishes.

You see that Chinese lady fussing about the tables in either place, being attentive and taking a hand with the waitering at busy periods? She owns this operation and one or two other establishments around town and is probably one of the wealthiest women in a town with more than its fair share of very wealthy people. Beijing: Seafood fried noodles

Hong Hong: Mixed starters and dim sum.

The River Kennet

by KennetRose

Reading's river is a surprisingly attractive one. For years it was hidden from the centre of town behind the brewery, but since the brewery was demolished and The Oracle built on the site, it has been made a feature.

It rises in the Wiltshire downs near Avebury, and has no industry to speak of on its banks for its whole length until it reaches the Thames a short distance east of Reading town centre. So it remains a gently chalk river all the way.

Although it runs through Reading in a man-made channel with flood controls, it's still liable to flooding in Winter, though not as severely as the Thames. Compare this picture, taken on 5 January 2003, with the one on the front page!

My travels on a Narrowboat

by binnie

Sorry if this is under the wrong Town, but it's the nearest i can get.
I work for Blakes Boats and as part of the training we had to go on the Norfolk Broads and a canal.
We went to Linslade near Leighton Buzzard along the Grand Union Canal.
There were only three of us and we were all female.
Sarah pictured with me has been before but over 20 years ago, so it really was a challenge.
