Travel Tips for Reading
Fishing
by KennetRose
I know very little about fishing, but I do know that when I walk to and from work along the Kennet towpath, there are often lots of guys fishing, and I've never seen so many fish actually being pulled out of the water. So I guess that means the fishing is good :)
Small, friendly, Thai/Nepalese restaurant
by KennetRose about The Wok.
Family-run restaurant and takeaway. She is Thai, and larger than life, he is Nepalese. There are separate menus for each cuisine.
Fixed price Thai buffet on Wednesday evenings, similar Nepalese buffet on Sunday evenings.
Usual oriental standards plus some good and succulent individual dishes. Bhuteko chicken - chicken pieces fried with onion, ginger and coriander in (it says here) Nepalese village style.
The Mad Stad (AKA the Madejski Stadium)
by easyoar
John Madejski is a self made man and successful entrepreneur who made his money out of publishing. He is also from Reading. More recently he has been ploughing some of this money back into Reading, especially into the Football Club.
I'm not sure exactly how much of the Stadium he paid for, but it was certainly a big percentage. Hence the Stadiums name. It is very modern, being only a few years old. It has been built to be extended (upwards) so if Reading hit the big time and get bigger crowds, they simply plug more seating in on top (you can see a white post sticking out the roof in this photo, which is what this is for).
This photo shows Reading playing the Top of the Table Ipswich Town on January 22nd 2005. The ground is almost full. Reading are playing in the blue and white hoops. Ipswich are in their away strip as they normally play in blue and white. You probably can't see much of the players though as I took this picture for the stadium rather than the players.
Reading to Henley
by OBT1
Saying I live in Reading is not strictly true. I actually live in a very small Oxfordshire village on the outskirts of Henley-on-Thames. Reading is Henley's closest big town and is where I am currently working and where I also spent a great year living with a couple of mates. For the benfit of this site, I will write about Henley and stick to mentioning just some of my old haunts from Reading.
Questions and Answers
Q: A Tuesday in Reading? "I have never been to Reading and have an entire day to myself on Tuesday - Sept 29th. Any suggestions on things to do / see?"
A: "Reading is pleasant enough, but is more for shopping than anything else, imo. There are certainly plenty of shops and a massive shopping centre. The toen museum has some..."
