Travel Tips for Reading
Messing about in boats
by KennetRose
"There is nothing — absolutely nothing — half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats."
Kenneth Grahame wrote The Wind in the Willows in the village of Mapledurham, now within Reading's town boundaries. So Ratty - actually a vole - was a Reading Rat!
The River Kennet leads to the Kennet & Avon Canal, and thence to Bath and Bristol, for travellers by narrow boat - a great way to spend time on the water.
The River Thames can be used by larger cruising craft as well as narrow boats. The Thames leads to Oxford and the great canal systems of the Midlands via the Oxford Canal.
Come here for a hot bird
by dejavu2gb about Nando's
A restaurant group that started in South Africa, preparing traditional Portugese Chicken with a fiery kick to it.
Nandos is without a doubt one of my favourite place, being a South African, I always seem to make this a port of call when I feel little homesick.
Its got a very fun atmosphere in which they serve great tasting Peri-Peri chicken in short spaces of time. I always have the half chicken and large chips (I am so predictable). I have it Lemon and Herb flavour, but before I get called a wuss, I douce it with as many peri-peri garlic sause as I can have, its just fantastic.
For those of you who love olives you have to have a little bowl of their olives, they are just to die for, absolutely fantastic!!!!
Saint Mary's Butts
by easyoar
St Mary's Butts Church has an interesting checkerboard brickwork. If you enlarge the picture you will be able to see this.
The name of the church is pretty strange, and at one point, gave its name to the rather outdated Broad Street Mall (originally called the 'Butts Shopping Centre', although this name got dropped for some unknown reason ;-) )
Interestingly, the name actually came about because King Edward IV decreed at one point that every Englishman should have a bow (as in bow and arrow) that was as tall as he was, and that every town should have a Butts where the archery practice could take place. The area in front of St Mary's butts was exactly where this practice area was. Indeed some of Readings Archers fought at the Battle of Agincourt. The Archery Butts stopped being used in 1631, when the town of Reading paid the sum of £3 for the privilege of stopping.
Geoffs Southern England Page
by Geoff_Wright
The South of England? Well, there's just so much to see, and not too many VT locations that cover it. So I have created this page which covers an area up to about 8o miles to the Southwest of London, and includes some of the most picturesque parts of the South of England. Of course there are many more towns to see, but you will need to spend a week or two in this area to see it in all its glory.
Apologies to anyone finding HTML codes on here. I haven't updated this page in months, but will be doing so shortly. Thanks.
