Travel Tips for Reading

Greenpark nature park - a sanctuary

by iris2002

This is my favourite walk along the River Kennett just off the city centre in Reading..... it's rather hidden and generally only locals know about it.

It's a natural sanctuary and just the other weekend I took a walk there and spotted the first nesting ducks and to my amazement ... an otter -- jumping and diving in the river alongside me!!

You can also watch the colourful barges drift along the river - a very relaxing experience all together :)

Oh dear Miahs

by easyoar about Miahs (Spencers Wood)

Miah's used to be excellent a year ago.The food was spot on and the service was good. When I went yesterday, the service was appalling. Snobby waiters. Waiters who would come and take our order (for 10 people) and refuse to write it down. Consequently the order got very confused and was incorrect too. The waiters also seemed to use bullying tactics trying to get us to order more than we wanted.

Food wise, the quality is worse than it was, but still quite good. Well it was Chicken Macney with a side order of Saag Paneer, not so sure now...

Reading Gaol

by KennetRose

In Reading gaol by Reading town
There is a pit of shame,
And in it lies a wretched man
Eaten by teeth of flame,
In a burning winding-sheet he lies,
And his grave has got no name.

And there, till Christ call forth the dead,
In silence let him lie:
No need to waste the foolish tear,
Or heave the windy sigh:
The man had killed the thing he loved,
And so he had to die.

And all men kill the thing they love,
By all let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword!

[Oscar Wilde: from The Ballad of Reading Gaol]

Reading, Berkshire, England

by SMeeds

Many people say that Reading is boring, but few towns have so many major cultural events taking place. Some of the best examples are Caversham Charity Folk Festival in June, WOMAD in July (see travelogue), and Reading Festival in August. All of these take place on or near Richfield Avenue in Reading.
If you are interested in photography and are in Reading on the first or third Monday of the month between September and June, why not visit North Reading Photographic Club?
Have a look at my Reading travelogues. If you like what you see, please consider rating this page. Thank you.
