Travel Tips for Reading

Smelly Alley

by mariegriffiths

The small and narrow pedestrianised street between Broad Street and Friar Street is called Smelly Alley although it's official name is Union Street. It is so called because of Frosts Fishmongers that hs been there for the past 40 years at least. The street also is home to the Graffiti shop mentioned by EdwinaDolly.

Colleys Supper Rooms

by NoodleT about Colleys Supper Rooms

This is really a special place and a restaurant where you'd go for special family occasions. The decor is Victorian and that includes the waitresses clothes. Each of the courses is bought round to your table first so that you can see what the choice is, you'll want to try it all. There is a fixed price for the food, five courses of it, and a fixed arrival time. I know someone else on VT has recommended it, so I'm not the only one who thinks it is a great place to go! It's all fantastic, there are some really unusual items too.

Going through Locks. Please...

by binnie

Going through Locks. Please don't be afraid like we were at first. It's easier than you think. We left sarah on the boat, whilst Helen and I ran to the locks and worked them. A tip is to always have the windlass at hand, never leave it on the lock doors once you have opened them. I left the windlass on once and it flew in the iar nearly knocking me out.
We couldn't wait until the next one came.
The magnificent way the water rushes through as you fill or empty the locks. We couldn't believe that we'd actually worried about it.

READING

by Imbi

Reading is in the Thames Valley about halfway between London and Oxford. It grew near the meeting place of the Rivers Thames and the Kennet which were the main transport routes through the ancient woodland which covered most of Southern England.
The town of Reading appears in the Domesday Book, and is almost certainly more than 900 years old. The name derives from the old Saxon 'Readingas' (rey-ad-ing-as), or the 'people of Reada', Reada being the name of a local Saxon leader. One of the most striking historical sites is the vitrified remains of Reading Abbey, burned under the reign of Henry VIII.
