Travel Tips for Reading

Huntley and Palmers Biscuit Factory

by mariegriffiths

Although biscuits aren't made in Reading anymore. The factory buidling still remains to the east of the town. The workers park still remains but has sadly allen into neglect over the last few years. It used to be immaculate up until the mid eigthes. Sense of place has a web site dedicated to the history of the factory. It used to emply 5,000 selling biscuits all over the world. Reading town was name the 'Biscuit Town' and it's football team the 'Biscuit Men'.

Best sandwiches in town, and much much more

by KennetRose about County Delicacies

Not a restaurant but a delicatessen shop, owned and run by a Polish family, with a nice line in sandwiches to order.

It is said that Kate Winslet's mum deals with the sandwiches sometimes, though I couldn't possibly comment!

Good range of cheeses sausages and salamis which you can sample, also a range of Polish and Ukrainian vodkas and superior tinned and packaged foods from all over the world.

The building itself is one of Reading's oldest and is rather splendid. The tongue sausage with black pudding

A Weekend in Reading

by St_Vincent

Reading is reasonably close to where I live and fairly easy to get to via Cenral London. I got a good deal on a Travelodge hotel and spent a weekend there in January 2009 meeting up with some friends.

Reading Ceremonies and Customs

by aaaarrgh

"Fertility Dances"

It is customary for large numbers of young men to crowd tightly into tents to watch dancing maidens. I infiltrated a ceremony to observe coloured balloons and rubber contraceptives being inflated and sent flying above the audience.

This is no doubt an ancient fertility ceremony. Admittedly it was hard to resist the three dancing damsels, dressed in taffetta skirts and singing in a strange trans-Atlantic drawl.
