Central and Cheap

The Travelodge group has hotels in and around most British towns and cities. The company is the hotel equivalent of the budget airlines and offers affordable, no-frills, accommodation and as with the budget airlines the best deals are available for those who book early.

Here in Reading Travelodge has four locations, two of which are in the city, the other two on main roads on the outskirts. The Reading Central is indeed central, being located at the end of the main shopping street, and is about a 10 minute walk from the railway station.

Unique Quality: The hotel has all the basics - clean en-suite rooms, comfortable beds, decent work surface and simple furnishings. The TV works and coffee and tea making facilities are provided.

Nothing special but with advance bookings from £25 (or less during special offer periods) makes for a cheap place to stay and is especially worth considering if looking for a bed for the night before, or after, using either Gatwick or Heathrow airports if coming to or from the West of England.

Poor but cheap

Travelodge hotels are aimed at the budget traveller with their no frills policy, and properties are usually fairly basic. But the Travelodge in Reading is one of the worse I have stayed at. There was no-one on reception when I turned up just after 2.00pm and when I did find someone I was told in no uncertain terms that I wouldn't be allowed to check in until 3.00pm. The building is a bit tatty on the outside and even worse inside. The one lift was slow and rather unreliable to the extent that I preferred to take the stairs rather than risk getting stuck. The room was OK by Travelodge standards and I went elsewhere for breakfast. I got the room for an amazing £12 a night under one of the Travelodge promotions but even at that price I'd think twice about staying there again. It's in a decent location for the town centre and about 15 mins walk from the train station.
