When I found myself stranded in Cambridge during a snow storm with nowhere to stay, I walked at least a mile in the snow (really!) to stay at the AcornGuest House. The owners welcomed my traveling partner and myself and gave us this amazing bright pink room. The breakfast is good English fare, and the rooms feel just right in the bucolic countryside. It's a 15-minute walk from the city centre on a quiet residential street. A really lovely place to stay -ask for the pink room when you go. Happy travels.

We booked this place at the last minute, which may have made it seem better than it actually is, but I did not find it as bad as the average Trip Advisor review pictures it to be. I probably would not go back but that is primarily because there are so many possible accomodations in Cambridge that I would try another the next time. It was clean. The staff were not overly courteous nor helpful but neither were they rude. The breakfast (I had the "full English.") was a bit below par compared to the other places where I stayed on this trip but again, it was not really bad. Mediocre might be the best overall summary of my experince here. It did not seem to be convenient, other than by taxi, to any of the primary reasons that a tourist would visit Cambridge (other than the Cam River);i. e., the University, restaurants and pubs, entertainment venues, et al. and the staff were not even able to recommend a nearby restaurant.
