Cambridge - Sightseeing, food & Travelling...

by STEFZAMM

Hello,
I will be visiting Cambridge just for one day.
I was planning to take a sightseeing hop on / hop off tour bus so I can see more of this city and punt along river cam. Do you think this is a good plan for one day in Cambridge or perhaps someone suggests other things?

Would love to have dinner in a local restaurant - think I'd go for The Eagle, any other suggestions?

The next day I will be travelling to London, so far I know I have to leave Cambridge by train and stop at Kings Cross in London ... can someone please forward a link to the railway station website. I will be staying at the Ashley Hotel, 74 Chesterton Road, Cambridge, CB4 1ER where I believe is best to take a taxi from the hotel to the railway station.

Any suggestions for a lovely day in Cambridge are most welcome.

Stephanie.

Hi! You'll find that Cambridge is small enough to walk around rather than take the tour bus. Your hotel is about 10 minutes (if that) walk from the city centre, the colleges etc., and pretty much on the river. The train station is about 2 miles away and so a taxi is probably your best option for getting there. The National Rail website has all the info you need for your journey into London - www.nationalrail.co.uk

For things to do - that depends what you like. As well as visiting one or more of the colleges and punting on the river you might like to take a wander round the Botanical Gardens or visit the Fitzwilliam Museum. There's plenty to do for a day out and everything is easily walkable.

The Eagle is a reasonable choice for eating out although personally I find it a bit touristy/studenty. If you want some restaurant ideas you could always visit my (or other VT'ers) Cambridge page.

Enjoy Cambridge.

Cheers, John.

I agree entirely about the hop-on bus: you really can walk everywhere you are likely to want to go easily enough.

Travel Tips for Cambridge

Magdalene College

by jo104

This college is one of the smaller colleges in Cambridge made famous by being the last college to admit women. It was only in 1988 when the first woman gained admittance to this college, the men wore black armbands and flew the flag at half mast in protest when the women joined.

Some of the famous people who attended Magdalene College is the great London diarist Samuel Pepys (who watched London burning in the great fire of London). Others include
CS Lewis (author) & Simon Ambrose (winner Apprentice no 3)

Mathematical Bridge

by CandS

While we were punting down the River Cam we came across the Mathematical Bridge...our guide told us that many years ago the maths students couldn't work out how the bridge was built without any bolts etc so they pulled it apart, then they couldn't get it to go back together without the bolts so they had to use them to join the bridge back together...

Old gravestones - the Hunnybuns

by angiebabe

A quick walk up a back lane way to Marks and Spencers took us a past the back of one of the churches - Holy Trinity Church - the laneway it appeared had been made through the old cemetary site with a few gravestones out on the opposite wall - looking at the gravestones that we went past made me laugh as knowing the old tradition of surnames coming about from the craft or employment that a man was involved here on some gravestones from the 1700s were the Hunnybuns! Conjured up all sorts of pictures of sweet and romantic characters!

Another gem off of Mill Rd. is Cambridge Blue, a rare non-smoking pub in the UK. Hip, hip, hooray. Hip, hip, hooray. The owner is very knowledgeable and friendly. Great ale selection that changes daily. Food out in the atrium looked excellent.

Books!

by jrs1234

Cambridge is a great place to come to if you like bookshops. There are 3 huge bookshops - Heffers, Waterstones and Borders and numerous smaller ones. Unlike most of the other shops in town, both Borders and Waterstones are open late from Monday to Saturday - Waterstones until 8pm, and Borders until 10pm!

Of the smaller places, Galloway and Porter is particularly worth a mention as it sells cheap leftover stock; it's just short walk north from Waterstones.
