Just a Regular B&B

I have seen worse places than Hamilton Lodge but also far better ones. During the five nights in this hotel, there was no big reason why I shouldn't be satisfied with. However, the combination of many smaller issues gave me the reason to rate this hotel with thumbs down.
Let us start with the building that seems to have been designed by the mad hatter's architect cousin or at least some Victorian who is related to the guy who came up with the plans for Heathrow Airport. That meant that there were a lot of small alleys, rooms in places you would never expect and the shower in another floor than your room. By the way, the shower had a “secret door” leading to a place which was too large for a closet and too small for a room. But the strangest thing was the fire exit leading through my room – nothing unusual either, but considering that this was the second smallest room I had in my travel career. I just wondered if people would have stumbled over my backpack, if there would have been a serious fire alarm. On the other hand, you heard everything in the building, leading from footsteps and giggling on the floor below to noises I do not want to explain further now from the neighbouring room. Staff was friendly, but not the kind of people you get warm with after a couple of days.
The room was fitted out with a sink, coffee/tea making facilities and a TV (four channels). My single room with shared bathroom was pretty small which would have been OK, would it not have been for the limited storage space and the fire exit (see above). As this was my first Cambridge accommodation, I have no B&Bs to compare this one with. But given the fact that I have found far better places for the same price during tourist season in York, I would opt for another B&B the next time I am in Cambridge.
Please note that you may find the names "Hamilton Lodge" and Hamilton Hotel". It's both the same adress...
