A basket of big warm croissants
At Cambridge, bed and breakfast accomodations are cheaper than hotels. It is difficult to find cheap accomodations between Midsummer Common and Coe Fen. Once you go beyond this perimeter or in the area of the Railway Station then you can find more affordable places to stay.
"Home From Home" was only 10 pounds more than what I paid for my hotel in London. The people who manage the house are very friendly and the room is quite comfortable. It's about a 10 minute walk from the house to Jesus Green across the River Cam on Victoria Avenue. Near the house is a bus stop (CITI 1) that enables you to make the journey to City Centre in about the same time. The area surrounding the house is a quiet residential neighborhood.
Also a short walk from "Home" is the Hakka Chinese restaurant (see Cambridge restaurant tip) at 24 Milton Road and a little store as well as a pay phone, which you'll need to make telephone calls using a phone card that you can buy at the small grocery store. (The best place to make international phone calls is at ITC Internet Cafe next to Jinling Noodle Bar and Cambridge Visitor Information Centre.)
Unique Quality: You have a choice of cooked English breakfast or continental breakfast, but they'll give you your selection of items from both menus. I really enjoyed the large flaky croissants, which are served warm from the kitchen. In the cozy dining area you can help yourself to fresh fruit (bananas and pears), orange juice and a variety of healthy cereals.
