Sunday Bus or train from Cambridge to Heathrow
by AnnieG.
Hi. I looked on the Natl. Express site for fares from Cambridge to Heathrow on Sunday, May 13, as we have a 5pm plane to catch. The site gives fares, then says they're only good Mon-Thurs., leading me to believe those busses don't travel on Sunday, but an email from them says they do. Anyone know:
a) if Natl. Express bus (coach, they're called) does run on Sunday from Cambridge to Heathrow, in time for us to catch 5pm flight? And Sunday fare?
b) if there's a TRAIN that might be faster? (And where it goes, and connections to Heathrow?)
c) Anyone who lives in Cambridge up for putting a middle-aged couple up for the night of May 12? (Just thought I'd ask!)

You can check the route to Heathrow from Cambridge by going to www.nationalrail.co.uk. They have a good travel planner on their site. Once in London you can either take the Piccadilly Tube line to Heathrow or the Heathrow Express from Paddington Rail station. I'm fairly positive that National Express runs buses from Cambridge to Heathrow on all 7 days of the week. The trip takes about 2 hours 30 minutes depending on traffic.

I just had a look at the National Express site and there are lots of coaches from Cambridge to Heathrow on Sunday, May 13. Did you look here?:http://www.nationalexpress.com/home/hp.cfm
I was trying to find the fastest way last September and the coach took only a bit longer, but without any changes, so for me it was better.

Loads of coaches indeed, so no problem if that's what choose. Use the 'other destinations' tab on the National Express site, rather than the 'airport' one; it's clearer, I think.
There are plenty of trains too, although you will have to change at least once. Use the nationalrail planner, as mentioned above, to find details. Don't put in your real date...it's too far away......try a Sunday in Feb/March. Train times won't change much, if at all, and neither will fares. Journey time varies from 1hr 30 to 2 hrs plus.
Don't live near enough to Cambridge to be any use with c)....sorry!
Travel Tips for Cambridge
King's College
by extrajoce
This college is the most famous because of its sheer size and elegance. Located in the heart of town, it really is a special treat, and symbolises the academic excellence of Cambridge. Definitely a must-see, it is also famous for it's boy choir, which I wasn't fortunate enough to hear though.
Is is located on King's Parade.
Don't step on the grass!
by christine.j
Some time ago we were watching an episode of the Midsomer Murders, in which the inspector was investigating a death at a private college. When he wanted to use a shortcut across the lawn, he was stopped and told only senior members were allowed to step on the grass. The very same sign can be seen at King's College. And sure enough, we saw a man coming out of a door marked "Private" and walk across the lawn. He must have been a very proud senior member! Actually it would have been shorter to just stay on the path, but then nobody would have known about his privilege.
Best Time to See Cambridge
by Trekker06
Not really 'Off The Beaten Path' this one. If you really want to see Cambridge at it's best, walk around at Dawn on a Sunday morning in Spring or Summer. The streets are deserted, the river is quiet. OK, nothing is open, but you'll get some absolutely superb pictures without hundreds of people cluttering them up.
The Castle Mound
by barryg23
Walk up Magdalene street past the bridge and turn into the Cambrideshire Council offices where you will find the castle mound. The Romans built a military post here as it was the highest point in the region.
Want to hear some live music?
by jrs1234 about The Junction
After several months of being closed for rebuild and refurbishment, the Junction has now re-opened for business. It's well known locally as a great place for club nights (dancing) and as a live music venue. Check the website for what's coming up.
It's a little bit out of town, but still walkable from the centre. While it was closed a big new leisure development (cinema + bowling + restaurants) opened next door - so it's no longer stuck on it's own as it used to be.
