Inexpensive accommodations in Cambridge?

by AcornMan

My wife and I may stay in Cambridge on the nights of July 27 and 28. If so, we need inexpensive but clean accommodations in a safe area, within walking distance of the city center. Thank you.

There is a good Youth Hostel in Cambridge within easy walking distance of the city centre. Also, as term will be over some of the colleges offer accommodation at good prices. Enjoy your visit, it's a wonderful city. Tissie

We chose the BENSON HOUSE Bed and Breakfast and enjoyed our stay there a few years ago. It is on Huntingdon Road near Girton, just a couple blocks from the County Arms Pub, and some punting activity, etc. You can see a pic of it and get more info on it at this website. I get no kickbacks if you stay there, by the way... http://www.theaa.com/hotels/46044p.html

Inexpensive accommodation in Cambridge is not easy. Try the YHA Youth Hostel (97 Tenison Road), or The Sleepers B&B in front of the train station. Also, there are some good B&B at Tenison Road, near the station, less expensive and in a very good location. Book ahead!

Travel Tips for Cambridge

Selwyn College 2

by AcornMan

Selwyn College is one of the thirty-one colleges that make up Cambridge University. It is also the college where I lived and took classes during the Summer of 1991. Selwyn College is just a short walk west from the city center, though having a bicycle is a good idea for getting around. If you're in town for an extended time it is very much worth your while to rent a bicycle from one of the many bike shops in town. This proved to be absolutely invaluable to me during my stay.

Globe Ale House

by Imbi

• Globe ale house is a typical English pub, if you are anywhere in England don’t miss the chance to enjoy the real environment of English pub.
There are verities of drink available for to enjoy a nice day.
• It is situated on Hills Road

Ely Cathedral

by eliowny

It's not too difficult to get to Ely on the train, and its nice to get away from the hordes of tourists in Cambridge in the summer. The cathedral is beautiful, really impressive, and there are a couple of nice pubs in the center to relax afterwards. Though I wouldn't say that Ely represents "real English life," its a heck of a lot closer than you'll see in most parts of Cambridge.

Italian Delicatessen

by pocketpiglet about Continental Stores

A place to buy ingredients for a picnic or stock on Italian products. This shop is run by an Italian family. Apart from the obvious such as pasta & rice, olive oils, cakes and cookies, they also have fruit juices and a very decent selection of olives, cheeses and ham... And they bake their own bread :)

Another great pub just next...

by steventilly

Another great pub just next door to The Mill is The Anchor.
This is a sprawling multi-level pub with floors and mezzanine floor and a limited amount of outside tables overlooking the river. Despite it's size it gets a bit teeming with people on a busy weekend evening and has a pretty good atmosphere. Anything.
