Orton Hall
This hotel, where I never actually stayed, is right in my old neighborhood, the Ortons. I lived in nearby Orton Malborne. Many of my walks took me right by this place. I sometimes met friends at the pub there for drinks.
Unique Quality: This 17th century building used to be the old Orton estate.

Nice grounds, 17th Century charm
When i was young Orton Hall was a home for educationally 'backward' (not a term we can use nowadays) girls. Such places have become increasingly rare in our modern climate of 'inclusivity'. Before the school it was the home of the Marqis of Huntly.
A few years back it was converted into a three star hotel. A few sections were added and some of the best grounds are rather marred by the car partks, but on the whole the conversion has been done with consideration and thought. A tasteful result.
Unique Quality: The public areas are well appointed, in particular the conservatory area is very pleasant.
A short walk away lies the original long drive up to the hall (The guest come in what was the tradesmans entrance). The path is about half a mile long or so with very impressive trees that were imported, I believe, from Canada decades ago. They must be at least distantly related to Giant Redwoods.
And of course only half a mile away on the Main road in Nobby's castle (see intro to Peterborough page)
