Central Location

The rack rates are a bit steep, but the location of this hotel is unbeatable (assuming you need to be in the centre of Peterborough). The bulk of the hotel is an add-on round the back rather than the coaching house facade that greats you. However the rooms are well proportioned and comfortable (if a bit hot). I stayed in a standard room, but the executive rooms have seperate access and are tucked away in the old part of the hotel (no noise from the hoi poloi).

Breakfast was good, although the spiced mushrooms were a bit much first thing in the morning - could be the cook put the wrong pepper on them.

Only downside are the rooms that back onto the local curry-house. In the summer with the windows open the smell can be a bit overpowering.

No Bull, honest

Despite being born and dragged up in this city, I had never been into the Bull hotel until recently. I was attending a conference there, and was quite impressed by the way the hotel has been re-furbished. The 'traditional' feel of the main pubic rooms & bar is well maintained, and the Sunday Carvery was excellent.

Many of the rooms are in a modern extension at the back of the hotel, built over the car park. Whilst smart, such rooms will lack charm.

Collegues who stayed there were less complimentary about the noise levels. Nearby night clubs, noisey ait-conditioning units on the roof and bins being emptied at 4AM may all have contributed to less than a perfect night's sleep.

I also was less than impressed by the rather dreary state of the seperate conference area - Bradfield house.

The only relief from the conference was to look out of the large windows into Westgate. The view seemed to mainly consist of badly-dressed overweight chavs having a fag outside the Queensgate shopping centre whilst bawling at their brats. All fags were of course extinguished and left on the pavement.
