Is the scaffolding still up on the cathedral?

by smeans2

Hi. I bypassed Peterborough this past May because I heard in Ely that the west front was covered by scaffolding. Since the cathedral was the main point of my visit (I'm a cathedral freak), I thought it would be better to wait. I'll be back in the U.K. (London) in February and again (also London) in May. Does anyone know if the scaffolding is down or when it is scheduled to come down? Many thanks in advance. Spencer

Cathedral scaffolding tends to be up for a considerable length of time, as it's ususally for a big restoration job. In this case, they are hoping to have it finished by the end of this year, but that will depend to some extent on the weather (which has been poor). May would probably be your safest bet,

There's a webcam link available on the West Front page of http://www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/ so you can check progress....the relevant camera isn't working at the moment though!

My friend had a word with the chap in charge of the building work who told her there was about 3 weeks work left. After that the scaffolding would be taken down. So barring any problems it should all be clearded up before xmas, Darren.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. The webcam is a great idea. Maybe they'll get the camera working :-) Cheers, Spencer

Travel Tips for Peterborough

Modern wacky sculptures

by sourbugger

I'm not a great fan of modern art but the sculpture park is well spaced out and provides a good diversion for a walk.

The following is adapted from the information leaflet :

The range of the work is wide. Some pieces are by artists whose roots are in Nigeria and the West Indies. Other sculptors draw their inspiration from the English countryside. Some artists are in the early stages of their career. The work of others, like Barry Flanagan, Anthony Gormley, John Maine and Sir Anthony Caro, is widely known and respected. It is important to see the sculptures for yourself and form your own view of what each is about.

There are nineteen pieces at Thorpe Meadows in the Nene Park, including work by Angus, Caro, Douglas-Camp, Grandjean, Gormley, Pope and Ryan. Most are on the south side of the rowing course.

Head out of town over cresent bridge towards Longthorpe Parkway and turn left into the rowing centre/ Butterfly Hotel.

Alternatively you can walk it from town (about a mile and a half) by heading to ASDA turning upstream and then keeping by the north River Bank. You will see stuff off to your right after a mile or so.

Swimming

by mccrorj

There are two main pools in the city although the Lido is only open during the summer months. The main pool, or regional pool, is what it promises. You won't find flumes or slides this pool is used mostly by serious swimmers and lacks a certain air of fun. Not helped by the drab colour schemes that they insist on using. If you want a splash around I wouldn't recommend you use the regional. If instead you want a serious work out then come in you'll find a full size pool with seperate diving pool.
