History, but tha's about it.

The Great Northern has very little that is great about it. A Classic railway hotel, built around 1850, it stands directly opposite Peterborough railway station - hence the name.

It has undergone a number of changes of ownership, including Peter Boizot, the founder of the 'Pizza Express' chain. Peter's chain of pizza parlours are well-managed and smart. I was therfore surprised that despite the fact some money has obviously spent on the place, it is still needing a major overall. This is especially true of the bedrooms that despite good quality furniture and beds have some very crudely fitted bathrooms and dodgy plumbing to boot.

The public rooms are of a better standard, with a colonial style dining room and a very red bar that is named 'The Old Soke'. That is, in fact, a clever pun as the full title of Peterborough in Medieval times was 'The Soke of Peterborough' and an 'Old Soak' is another slang term for a drunk - you don't get it, oh forget it !

There is talk of of the whole place being demolished as part of a re-generation scheme. I know Boizot is against - but it is now out of his hands and is in administration. As of March 2009 the local council has offered to buy the place - I just hope they don't offer to run it as well !

UPDATE - JULY 2009. NOW OFFICIALLY BANKRUPT - dont' book !

Unique Quality: The Staff are`excellent, I must say - very friendly and accommodating.
