Travel Tips for Chester

Hilbre Island Cross

by sandysmith

The Grosvenor Museum has room displays from a victorian house - 20 Castle street towards the back, several Roman stones and various other artifacts. However one that caught my attention was this saxon cross found on Hilbre Island - just near where I live.

British and Contemporary

by gordonilla about 1539 - Fifteen Thirty Nine

The restaurant was advertised in the hotel, and it looked as if there was an interesting menu. Additionally during my visit (January 2011), they were offering a two course dinner for £15.00; however there was also a meal supplement depending what main course you selected. My fillet steak attracted a £10 supplement.

The restaurant and bar has an excellent atmosphere and appearance with staff who truly seem interested in making your visit a great experience. It was busy, and I can imagine it is even busier when the Chester Racecourse Fixtures begin - May to September each year. I had not made a reservation, and it was struggle to get a table, but finally did. A great an uninterrupted view over the racecourse itself.

They pride themselves in using local suppliers and local produce - so from my meal, the most distant ingredient was the Goat's cheese which was sourced 120 miles from 1539 - and the nearest was in fact the herbs used in the kitchen which came from 0 miles away! Yes 0 miles - the Head Chef works with the Racecourse grounds staff to cultivate an in-house herb garden. Bread; Beetroot Risotto with a Goat's Cheese and Watercress salad; and a Fillet Steak with Pepper Sauce.

Elephant

by muguruki

There are some dreadful lumps of metal and stone around the city of Chester masquerading as art but this bronze sculpture is an exception.

The 1 metre tall sculpture of an elephant calf by Annette Yarrow was donated by Chester zoo. The sculpture can be found opposite the town hall on Northgate Street

Eastgate Clock

by Rachael71

I once read that the Eastgate Clock is the most photographed clock in England. I've no idea whether this is true, but certainly if you are to visit Chester on a Saturday afternoon in summer, it is difficult to pass down the street in a straight line for the numbers of people stopping dead to take a snapshot. The bridge is part of the city's Roman Walls (although the current section dates back only as far as the 18th century), and the clock itself was presented to commemorate Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in the late 19th century.

It's an easy landmark to find in Chester and so many visitors use it as a meeting point. So many in fact that it can be difficult to find who you are looking for. Head instead for a less crowded landmark such as the market cross at the top of Bridge Street, where you are less likely to be trampled by shoppers!

Water Tower and Gardens

by gordonilla

The gardens are built on reclaimed land during the Victorian period. They seem to have a range of interesting social amenities with the designated conservation area they are located within.

There is also a Roman influenced dolphin mosaic.
