Travel Tips for Chester
Northgate
by sandysmith
The old Northgate was a toll gate and was under the charge of the city sheriffs.
The new Northgate was designed by Thomas Harrison and commissioned by the Earl of Grosvenor, the Mayor, in 1807. The classical arched gate was built between 1808 -1810.
The Northgate is just by the Roman garden - where this pic was taken - and near to the ampitheatre.
sandwich and a pint
by Jonathan_C about Bear and Billet
The Bear and Billet is housed in one of Chester's more beautiful buildings and, after more than 200 years in business, this pub seems to have the basics down pretty well. I had a quite decent salad and a pepper steak sandwich with chips and a pint of Guiness for around 7 british pounds. Friends I encountered later paid more for less elsewhere.
"Enthusiasts of obscure Beatles information may be interested to know that John Lennon's grandmother, Annie Jane Milward, was born in the Bear and Billet in 1873"

Glorious Chester Cathedral
by A2002
Chester cathedral stands on the site of a 10th century Saxon Church, dedicated to St. Werburgh. In 1092 it became a Benedictine Abbey, and a new church in the Norman style was built, parts of which can still be seen. This church was rebuilt, from about 1250 onwards. This process took 250 years, resulting in the building now standing. Due to the dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, the abbey was closed in 1540, but the next year it became the Cathedral of the newly created Diocese of Chester. Hence, in this place of history and beauty, the worship of god has been offered for over one thousand years.
Bridge of Sighs
by Andrew_W_K
There is a bridge that crosses the Shropshire Union canal just off the city walls near the Northgate that dates back to 1793 and was built to allow condemned prisoners to walk from the gaol to the chapel to receive the last rights prior to execution.
Being honest I look at it, think of the one in Venice and sigh that it isn't the same one!
I wouldn't make a special journey to see it but if you're passing......
bells, bells, bells
by Jonathan_C
On the Sunday afternoon I was in Chester the bells of the Cathedral, located in a separate bell tower in the garden, began ringing around 3 p.m. The volunteer bell ringers kept up a lovely chaos of notes that resounded through the center city for over an hour. After soaking up the clarion tones, the sunshine and the greenery outside the cathedral, you should head inside for a more orderly musical experience.
