Travel Tips for Chester

Walking along the City Walls (1) Canal Locks

by MarvintheMartian

Between Northgate and the Racetrack just past St Martin's bridge (one of the new bridges) are a series of Canal Locks.

It's fascinating to watch canels working there way through the series of locks during the summer.

Curries for all tastes :)

by Waoife about Shere Khan

Open late - very handy on a Sunday night when everywhere else in Chester seems to stop serving around 8.30. There's a huge choice of dishes from the very mild to extremely hot so there's something for everyone.

The mixed starters are good value & easy to share.

half timbered houses

by Jonathan_C

Why is it that we can't build like this any more? It seems obvious that people love this type of construction but the bottom line, short time horizon culture we've created makes it next to impossible. At least we can enjoy the fruits of earlier generations' labors.

Sigh...

Bridge of Sighs

by bugalugs

No you are not mistaken this is not Venice but Chester where this Bridge of Sighs is situated.

The bridge is built over the Shropshire Union Canal, and was built in 1793. This was a link between the jail and a chapel situated in the Blue Coat Hospital. The bridge was used by prisoners who walked across the bridge to the chapel to receive their 'Last Rites' before they were executed. The bridge at the time had railings so the prisoners could not attempt suicide.

The Blue Coat Hospital was built in 1717 and originally a charity school.

The jail at the time was built into Northgate and the dungeons were cut into the rock below the city walls, they had no windows and air was let in through pipes.
It is also said that this area is haunted, but then again with so many executions I suppose it would be.

Chester racecourse

by sandysmith

The racecourse is one of the oldest in Britain and you can get a good view of it during the circuit of the walls.

The home of Chester Races is the beautiful 65-acre Roodee- the "Sweet rood of Chester" (Gascoigne 1575)- whose curious name derives from the Saxon Rood- a cross and the Norse suffix Eye- meaning an island- literally 'The Island of the Cross'.

In Saxon times, the waters of the Dee covered the whole of this area with the exception of a small island upon which stood a stone cross, the stump of which you may still see in the middle of the racecourse today.
