Travel Tips for Chester
The Rows
by sandysmith
The Rows are probably the most often photographed sight in Chester, a series of half-timbered buildings joined with long galleries, looking like a Tudor shopping mall -most are in fact Victorian! There is not one single "Rows" but several complexes of houses in the same style, with the best examples on Watergate, Eastgate and Bridge Street. The layout of the Rows goes back to the 13th century. There were shops or warehouses at street level, with a long gallery above, reached by steps from the street level. 1 Bridge Street - the corner buildings at The Cross are the most famous of Chester's Victorian 'black-and-white' revival. They were designed by the local architect T.M. Lockwood and are dated 1888.

Did you know there were Roman ruins in Chester? You didn't? Well, they are all over. Those Romans really were ahead of their times as tourist weren't they? Except they were bad tourists. They stayed, and stayed, and stayed ... :)
beautiful architecture
by Jonathan_C
This is why most people come to Chester -- to stroll through a lovely, small city with some of the most beautiful architecture you'll find anywhere. Left and right, up and down, your eye and your camera will be busy taking in this magnificent collection of medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture.
Cathedral Grounds
by MarvintheMartian
The grounds around the Cathedral are very peaceful and a good place to have a quick sandwich if you're in town for the day.
This picture was taken of the grounds from the city walls and was taken in March when the Cherry Tree is just blossoming.
A Great looking Clock
by Myfanwe
Eastgate clock is a great feature right in the heart of the Centre, situated above the Eastgate (funny that eh!). The Clock tower was erected in 1899 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier in 1897. The ornate iron framework was designed by John Douglas and built by James Swindley, a Handbridge blacksmith. The clock itself was made by J.B Joyce of Whitchurch, with a pinwheel deadbeat mechanism operated by a pendulum weighing over 50kg.
