Travel Tips for Chester

Row, row, row your boat

by bugalugs

Take a walk down to the river and hire a motor boat (quite slow) or a pedal boat or even a rowing boat. I think boat hire is for about 30 minutes and it costs about £6.
I know when we went we got off the boat at 6.30pm and we were the last people. They closed then! I found this really strange that light nights and nice weather was here at last and a place that is supposed to cater for tourists shut up so early! Very strange.

Lovely scenery as you wend your way along the river.

Coffee in Watergate

by gordonilla about The Barista's

I was in need of a coffee, and decided to see what this coffee shop was like - it was warm and welcoming!

It seems there is wifi available and has a mixed clientele. coffee of course and I had a piece of Almondy Cake.

Chester Cathedral

by Tom_Fields

Chester Cathedral stands on a spot with a long history, dating back to the Roman period. It is believed to the the site of an ancient pagan temple. In the 11th century, a monastery was built here. When King Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in 1539, it was incorporated into the cathedral. Work has continued on it ever since.

Unlike most cathedrals, which stand alone, this one almost blends into its surroundings. It makes it seem much more approachable. However, it's very dark inside, making it difficult to shoot good photos.

St Peter's Ecumenical Christian Centre

by gordonilla

The centre is located within St Peter's Church, which itself is located at the crossing of the four main streets within the city walls. I also understand that it is built on the foundations of the Roman Headquarters for the city.

The church was founded in 907 AD by Ethelfleda, who was in fact the daughter of King Alfred (aka Alfred the Great). It has remained a centre of Christian worship ever since that time.

It has seen and experienced many changes through the Reformation, the English Civil War and even into Victorian times.

St Johns Church

by Myfanwe

St Johns Church was built on the site of an Anglo-Saxon Church. It was the Cathedral church of the diocese of Chester from 1075 - 1102 and became a Parish church in the late 1540's. Today some fantastic ruins of the Chapter house with great Norman arches - don't miss the wooden coffin set into one of the Arches.
