Travel Tips for Chester

bring your chalk bag

by Jonathan_C

The canal along the north side of Chester is cut through the living rock and provides a few very nice spots for bouldering as evidenced by the chalk marks. Even if you left your rock shoes at home you should still be able to work a few problems on this wall and get away from the crowds while you're at it.

Yummy food

by Myfanwe about Cafe Naj

Cafe Naj is situated at the beginning of Hoole Road, just minutes away from the City Centre. As we were staying in a just down the road we decided to give this restaurant a try. The food here was lovely although due to my brain being like a sieve I can't remember what I had! I do remember it being really good though., the waiters were really helpful and service was prompt. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would eat there again given half the chance! Since doing some research for this tip I have learned that Cafe Naj was voted Best Asian Dining Experience in the Chester Food & Drink Festival 2010.

Chester Cathedral

by uglyscot

The Cathedral was originally a benedictine Monastery, dedicated to St Werburgh. It seems from records that a church stood on the site since theearly 10th century. After the dissolution of the monasteries, it became a church for the Church of England.
Admission to the cathedral is charged to visitors, but worshippers enter free. Evensong is at 17.30 from Monday -Friday.

The refectory dates to the 13th century and catered for 40 monks and their visitors.
It is open from 9.30-16.45 daily Mon-Sat, 12-16.00 on Sundays.

The modern Creation Window shows the 6 days of creation.

There is also a cathedral shop selling Cds, prints, china, spoons, jigsawa etc. Online : shop@chestercathedral.com

Chester Castle

by Balam

Sadly little remains of the Castle built by the Normans built from 1070 onward. it was a typical motte and bailey castle of the time. from 1788 to 1822 Thomas Harrison knocked most of the castle down to build a Shire Hall, Law Courts, Jail and barracks which are the buildings that can be seen today along with the only remaing significant survivor is the Agricola tower which dates from around the end of the 12th century.

When we called the castle was closed and only open to booked tours.

King Charles Tower

by iwys

Formerly known as the Phoenix Tower, this is the tower from which King Charles I watched his cavalry defeated by the Parliamentarians at the Battle of Rowton Mooor in 1645.

The Painters' Guild, which included the famous seventeenth century artist John Souch, used to meet in an upper room in the tower.
