Travel Tips for Chester

Mock Tudor

by sandysmith

The black and white timbered buildings in Chester may not be as old as you think....many are from the victorian age. Even so the styles around are pleasant to look at. Take time to enjoy some of the detail closer up on the buildings.

The old Coffin

by sandysmith

The ruins of St John are the original east end and include part of the Norman chancel, the 14th century ;lady chapel and two meieval sidde chapels. For me the most intersting object though was an old coffin. This old coffin believed to be from the 13th century, bearing an inscription "Dust to Dust" was found by the sexton in the 19th century and set into the wall of the ruins of St John.

Roman Amphitheater

by DrewV

To explore Chester is to walk through the millenia. To start, check out the ruins of the Roman Ampitheater, located to the immediate southeast of the city center between the walls and the river.

The Roman colony here, on the furthest reaches of the empire, was called Deva. Archaeological restoration has produced a remarkably well-preserved amphiteatre and other ruins of the nearly 2000-year old city. Awesome.

The Walls

by DrewV

The next stop on the timeline is the Middle Ages. To protect the city of wild Welsh marauders, wild English marauders, wild Viking marauders, wild French marauders, wild Saxon marauders, tax collectors, nobles, crusaders, and all around mean people, the town constructed a large wall. Bid deal, you might say. Most medieval towns had walls. That's true, but most cities no longer have walls, having torn them down to expand the city. Chester's still stands and stands proudly.

Shropshire Union Canal

by iwys

This was built just outside the walls, along the line of the medieval town ditch, in 1772-73. It is still used by barges today. The earliest part of the Shropshire Union Canal was this section, the Chester Canal, which ran from Chester to Nantwich and was constructed under an Act of Parliament in 1772. Some 21 years later an Act of 1793 saw the length from Ellesmere Port to Chester being built. The Montgomery Canal was added under another Act of Parliament of 1794 and ran from Carreghofa to the Newtown Basin and was used principally for carrying lime for agricultural use.

Nowadays, the canal is used mainly for boating holidays. A canal narrowboat costs around £1110 per week to hire.
