Chester Races - worth a visit
by clareabee
Chester is famous for its horse racing and has regular meets thoughout the summer season.
If you are in the area when they are on it would make for a good day out - got use public transport - don't even consider driving in it is crazy!
For a special meal - unless you're really hungry!
by Rachael71 about The Living Room
The Living Room is part of an expanding chain of restaurants, mostly located in the north of England. Music is provided by a guest pianist and the atmosphere is one of cool sophistication - they call it 'Manhattan loft with a colonial twist', which I guess is one way of putting it! The Chester branch has seating for 200 diners so booking may not be necessary. However, the bar area allows for 300 people, so if you are looking for somewhere quiet, this is probably not the right place. There is a great cocktail list, including imaginative non-alcoholic choices for non-drinkers. The service is efficient and very friendly, the staff make you feel very special.
People were reasonably dressed up here, so I wouldn't recommend going in jeans and trainers.
The Living Room is part of the Hi-Life Dining Club. We had lamb cutlets, which were delicious. If you want vegetables and potatoes, you have to pay extra, so the price of the main dish may only be a fraction of what you pay. The veg were very good though. The potato wedges and spring roll starters were good.
The meal was delicious but we discovered that it is not the place to go if you need a good feed. We were still peckish when we left and stopped at the chippy on the way home to fill up!
The Medieval Victorian architecture of the Rows
by datapanik
The splendid black and white half-timbered buildings of The Rows in Chester's town centre are unique galleried walkways containing shops on two levels. These have existed since Medieval times but have been rebuilt and renovated over time and a closer look reveals that most of the current buildings are in fact Victorian or even Edwardian.
The Tudor House
by sabsi
The plaque on the Tudor House says that it is the oldest town of Chester (from 1503). Experts, however, think that it's more likely been built in 1603.
Oh well, it's definitely a cute house and it's definitely leaning over to the right!!
The Rows
by gordonilla
The city has been a bustling and commercial centre since medieval times. The Rows have an unclear history, but they do offer a location to shops above street level and away from the street and weather. The shops on the upper level are interesting and meet most if not all our needs.
They are located within the confines of the four main shopping streets of the old city centre. They are somewhat unique and are approximately 700 years old - no other city seems to have this kind of building.
