Travel Tips for Chester

Walking along the City Walls (2) Canel

by MarvintheMartian

The city walls take you through the centre of the city itself , along by the canel (where this picture was taken) and the race track towards the River Dee. Eventually you'll end up back at the Eastgate Clock (if that's where you started). Allow a couple hours or more to walk right around, however if you're like me you'll just see bits at a time!

The Sport of Kings

by gordonilla

It was quite interesting to be staying in a hotel that was on the racecourse and even has a restaurant which I ate at too.

This is the home to both racing and polo! I am not such an expert on horses, but I think that the course here is well known and unusual - it seems most of the course is run on the curve. It is a flat course too, no jumps!!

It seems that the racing season at Chester starts in the month of May.

NOTE: I am informed that the sport of Kings is not racing but Polo - so the course qualifies which ever is true.

Chester Cathedral

by DrewV

Medieval Chester was one of England's great port cities. The River Dee was wide and deep, allowing easy access to the Irish Sea. Bouyed by the wool trade, the city also benefited from its proximity to the dangerous Welsh, thus ensuring a steady supply of royal funds for defense.

The height of Chester's success is evident in its magnificent Cathedral. Originally a Benedictine monastery named for St. Werburgh (an old-school abbess from Mercia -- there are no coconuts in Mercia), the Gothic structure was rededicated as an Anglican cathedral when Henry VIII ran the monks out of town.

It's a lovely old cathedral. I have to admit, though, that having travelled all over Europe, I have begun to get a wee bit jaded about cathedrals. After all, most Gothic cathedrals are very very similar. And it seems as though every town in Europe has one. And since Anglican cathedrals have been swept bare of the golden accoutrements that grace their Catholic brethren, they're frankly a bit boring. But lovely.

Northgate Lock

by sandysmith

During your walk around the walls Thomas Telford's impressive staircase of three wide deep locks on the Shropshire Union Canal can be seen. They date from the time when Chester was a thriving canal port, and its quite a feat for the canal boats to go throught them - can be quite a snarl up in the high season with the canal traffic waiting to get through.
