Travel Tips for Chester

Town Crier

by bugalugs

Chester still has a town crier. At the High Cross on the main street at 12 noon you can hear the cries of 'Oyez Oyez Oyez'. From May - August, Tuesday - Saturday.

This cross as I mentioned before was in the Roman Gardens and apparently recorded as being there in 1377. Due to wars and sieges it eventually became dismantled, part is now in north Wales, some of it vanished and this part remains and is now situated in the main street.

A Crypt!

by bugalugs about Watergates Bar

We had been on a rowing boat on the river and decided it was time to eat and made our way back to the main area of Chester looking for either a pub which served food or a restaurant that sold drink - lol. Found a pub, no food! Asked and were told it was pretty quiet on a Sunday evening! This was only about 7pm! Anyway we found Watergates Bar. Was quiet at first but soon started filling up. Lots of nooks and crannies and a sort of tunnel area where we actually sat and then found it had at one time been a crypt! Didnt put us off our food though.
People kept walking past us and we could hear them obviously walking up some stairs. I asked where they were going and was told there was a roof terrace. The food was actually quite good, although I did think my plate was a little overpowering as there was such a lot on it.
I had Chicken, bacon and cheese brochette with was on skewers with melted cheese and a BBQ sauce with fries. The cost then (May 2004) was £6.45.

Food was only served until 8pm, whether this was just on a Sunday I dont know.

The Arche.

by wandabendik

The present gateway was constructed by Lord Grosvenor in 1769. When the Medieval Eastgate was taken down. Traces of the Roman arches were found inside the later structure. The clock was added later in 1897 and was presented to the city by Edward Evans-Lloyd, Citizen and Freeman.

Chester is a town of balconies

by MarvintheMartian

This picture taken at the corner of Bridge Street and Eastgate Street is the ancient meeting place of the principal streets of Chester. Following Bridge Street you will meet the River Dee and the Bridgegate while continuing along Eastgate Street you will lead on into Watergate Street and eventually the Watergate. On either side, you can see the openings of the remarkable covered galleries known as the Rows, an architectural feature unique to Chester.

The Rows are simply long, covered arcades formed by running a highway through the first stories of a street of old buildings. You mount from the roadway to the Rows on frequent flights of stone steps and find yourself in the strangest shopping streets in England.

divine music

by Jonathan_C

The Anglican church has always impressed me with its devotion to music as a vehicle for connecting with the divine. It was a treat to visit the cathedral during choir practice and hear the lovely organ filling the hall with it's deep resonant tones.

The bass pipes are located at ground level behind the organ loft in the north transept. You can stand right next to them for an exhilirating musical experience.
