The Mill
by bugalugs
The Mill was built in 1784. It has five floors and today when visiting, you can seen them still producing calico.
The machinery in the mill was run on steam power and there is an 1830's Beam Engine and a horizontal steam engine both of which steam daily.
The noise of the machinery in the mills used to be so intense that mill workers had to lip read to know what someone was saying to them!
The photograph shows one of the doorways with the date the mill opened.
The Village Shop
by bugalugs
This shop which was owned by Greg, would have been used by most of his workforce. The money they spent here would be deducted from their wages. Or they could have been given tokens - in their wages - in leiu of money - which they would then use to buy goods in the shop.
