Travel Tips for Middlesbrough

Holding Back The Waters

by steventilly

Unlike say The Thames Barrage, this is not intended to stop flooding, but rather to stop the horrible murky water of the river Tees getting back upstream at high tide. It works too, with a great improvement in river quality upstream of the barrage.

In addition, the barrage has provided the Tees White Water course, a man made canoe & rafting course. You can book time on the course and can also hire equipment.

Engineering Masterpiece

by steventilly

The Transporter Bridge is Middlesbrough's most famous landmark an justifiably so. It's a magnificent structure, designed to carry traffic across the river while allowing clearnace for the large ships that used to use the river.
The bridge isn't quite unique, there's another one at Newport in Wales, and there used to be one in Runcorn in Cheshire. The bridge is a protected monument and costs a fortune to keep it running. Take a trip on it to help pay for it's upkeep.

Riverside Stadium

by sabsi

The stadium of Middlesbrough FC is located at the river - hence the name ;-) It looks quite fancy from the outside even though it's located in kind of a rough area of town. But then again all English stadiums that I have seen look very fancy .. even the ones of the smaller clubs! It's incredible how much money English Football teams must have!

Marie forced me to put a tip here even though I have only seen the stadium from the outside. As I'd love to watch a Premier league match in England some day you could bribe me to write more with tickets, Marie ;-) Wear Red!

by Diosa

'mousy thompson' workshop is well worth a visit if you're anywhere near kilburn... a very popular local carver (been going for many generations) go buy your mum/dad/auntie an ashtray/mini-bookcase with the traditional carving of the mouse.. they'll LOVE it!

Low Force

by cheekymarieh

Low Force is a waterfall on the River Tees. It is not quite as powerful as it used to be due to a dam being built further upstream but is still a spectacular sight. The dam was built to help preserve the water for use by local commuities in their everyday life.

It is located higher up the River Tees nearer to the source. It is possible to walk up to its larger neighbour High Force.
