Travel Tips for Stockton-on-Tees
Stockton High street by night
You can see this wintery scene, snow flakes falling at night - the taxi rank waiting for their next customer and the town centre pretty empty. This picture was taken from my hotel room - which I had to change 3 times in order to get some decent wireless access. Nice little English town, quiet and relaxed.
1st World War Memorial - Stockton
The memorial is built of Portland Stone and rests on a reinforced concrete foundation, raised upon three steps and a stone seat (or base) for the display of wreaths. Over this is a plain podium having a bronze panel on its front containing the words:-
The names of the fallen are inscribed in the book of remembrance laid up in the adjoining church.
"The Birthplace Of Railways"
The most notable point in history for Stockton was in 1825 when the world's first passenger railway opened. It operated between Stockton and Darlington. There are still one or two reminders of the past connection to this to be found including the ticket office from which the first tickets were sold.
