Fowey public transport?

by psychocy

I'm going to be stopping by Fowey a few weeks from now, on a backpacking trip. I was wondering if anyone knew what the local transportation situation is. My next solid destination is Marazion, which is fairly distant. Is there a service in town to get to St Austell, where I could catch a bus to Penzance near Marazion? Or is there a service that would take me directly there? Didn't see anything for a straight trip on National Express, etc. More interested in the Fowey-St Austell situation, because I know a service runs from there.

Also, any must-see places around Fowey to add to my list? Very interested in castles, standing stones, ancient legends, etc.

Whilst in Cornwall, you must visit the wonderful Eden Project at St Blazey near St Austell. It is possible to get there on public transport

Have a wonderful trip, Cornwall is Beautiful

Hi Ken:-)
Sounds like a great trip you are planning here in our area.
OK lets see if we can help, at least with the transport situation. First off, National Express are unlikely to be of much help in rural Cornwall as they are more a National company leaving the small town areas to smaller companies and also smaller vehicles.......have you ever been down a Cornish lane??? lol. Anyway, I have found this link for you
I hope it is of some help. I am not a great authority on Cornwall, for that your best bet is VT member Geoff_Wright, tell him I sent you! As I said, I dont know Cornwall that well, but I do know that the area west of St Ives is a very special, mystical area, as of course is Tintagel. Please dont hesitate to ask us if we can help any other way. We are in North Devon and if you are planning on coming to this area at all, let us know and we will supply coffee!

you will have to catch the local bus from Fowey thro Par into St Austell it runs Quite regular from the top of the hill at Windmill by the school, it will take you into the main bus/trail station at St Austell where you will be able to link to Penzance, the bus to Penzance is not very regular and are at present on the winter schedule so you would be better getting the train.
You can also take water taxis in and around Fowey and there are ferries across to Polruan and around to Mevagissey (summer) Fowey is V quiet at this time of year so do not expect too many places to be fully open!

just a few corrections on barnards comments, for "stream" I think he means the River Fowey, Lostwithiel is spelt like this and in Lostwithiel you will find Restormel castle, and you can catch a rather irregular bus service there, not like the services he gets in Londin, spot the typing error

Travel Tips for Fowey

Plant Life

by MikeAtSea

Palm trees is not something you would associate England with. Here in Cornwall that is however quiet normal. The warm Gulf Stream that hits the South Coast of England ensures moderate warm weather year round ensuring that some plants are growing here, that one would not find further north.

The Ship Inn

by MikeAtSea

Built in 1570 by John Rasleigh, a celebrated merchant, it is named after his famous ship "Frances of Fowey". Although greatly altered over the centuries, one room remains much as it was originally with its ornamental ceiling, fine oak panelled walls and carved over the fireplace, the names of John and Ales Rashleigh and the date 1570.

St. Catherine's Point

by MikeAtSea

Here the Chapel of St. Catherine build at about 1390 stood on a cliff at the harbour entrance where in medieval times a light was burning as a primitive lighthouse. The fort below was built in the reign of King Henry VIII.

Fowey (pronounced Foy) is an attractive historic maritime port in Cornwall. We based ourselves there for two nights in April 2009 and found the area particularly picturesque.

Located on the Fowey River, there is a long, deep harbour, with plenty of boat traffic to ensure the views are ever-changing. Across the river is the town of Polruan, and regular ferries run between the two ports.

Fowey - Cornwalls hidden jewel

by MikeAtSea

Fowey, the quintessential Cornish port town, rises from the edge of the River Fowey’s peninsula across rolling, fertile hillsides. Bright, friendly homes line the streets that spider out from the port. From the Polrun Blockhouse at the harbour’s entrance to Readymoney Cove and St. Catherine’s Castle, Fowey’s cosy town centre is easily explored on foot.
Take advantage of the close proximity of such locations as St. Austell, where the Lost Garden’s of Heligan are now Europe’s largest restored garden and the biomes of The Eden Project impress with their architecture and purpose. Then head farther north to Bodmin for both Lanhydrock House, an atmospheric Victorian country house, and the underground dungeons of Bodmin Jail. Along the way, stop at Tristan Stone, a 6th century monolith, and take a peek at St. Sampson’s, a 13th century church situated in Golant on the steeply-wooded river banks.
